I really like BR, although every time I don't gush over it like all the twenty-somethings I know that tell me I don't get it because I'm, like, too old dude. Like we didn't have angst and alienation when I went to school. It's a very Japanese film though. BTW, "Beat" Takashi is huge- there's a lot more to him than BR and Takashi's Castle (or MXC as we know it stateside!) *g*

I own the film. It's quite striking. You're right - it's nothing to gush over and it's very Japanese (I speak as one having lived in Japan, as well as being a Japanese film fan). The irony on display plus the unexpected character development, I think, is what appeals to those of us who are no longer in. our 20's (I think I'm no longer in my 20's - but my mind isn't what it used to be)

For me, it was the perkiness of the initial training video that lent a bizarre creepiness and set the tone for film's general insanity.

Yes, the training video was brilliant. However, the film has the logical holes that appear in a lot of Japanese film. That being said, the characters and their development at times are interesting.

I like the scene at the beginning where the one kid is trying to give the fat kid back his crossbow. It's just obvious that some of the kids are stuck in their old mindset and haven't adjust to what is happening.
