Now if you were on the U.S. Chess Federation forum, this diversion from the topic would result in the thread being locked for being off-topic. Yes, they lock threads for going off-topic. Yep, they have
moderators who spend their time herding comments for topicality.

This is one of the best websites I know. It manages to get off-topic without getting stupid or obscene. By the way, I was kicked off baezfans@yahoogroups.com for refusing to have hysterics when Sorkazy was elected.

Ah yes, there's the thing of it.

I remember week after week of being treated to the footage of Rodney King being beaten by L.A. policemen after leading them on a drug-crazed car chase. Every night on every network we were fed this.

On 9/11, all the networks stopped showing footage of people from the towers leaping to their deaths in order to escape death by fire or smoke.

I believe one of the reasons given was they didn't want America's "emotions to get out of control".

Pretty much every terrorist attack we've had since 9/11 (and yes, we have had terrorist attacks since 9/11), such as when a Jewish member of a community center was gunned down in California, or a mall shooting in Colorado (?) that left 5 dead, or when a muslim student aimed his car at a group of fellow students in an attempt to run them over...the media and law enforcement immediately reports "We don't believe this incident was religiously motivated."

Except that every incident WAS religiously motivated.

News stories and movies fall under the heading of "media". And for some reason, imagery likely to make Americans ashamed or introspective (Look how rascist we are!) gets round the clock exposure. Imagery of violence or injustice committed against Americans, especially by the "Minority of the Week", is buried, excused, or explained away.

Amen to that.

In the Magaret Truman book I mentioned, a neo-Nazi cult is the subject of a Waco/Ruby Ridge type assault on their ranch, and then it turns out the villain is a rogue FBI man.

Taking a break on a construction site, smoking cigarrettes, whatever, they all assumed a perfectly balanced squatting position. It was the preferred position of rest.

At the risk of yanking this thread even further off-topic, this whole discussion reminds me of one of the funniest pictures I've ever seen.

There's a nasty exercise that used to be called a wall press. Basically, you just put your back to the wall and squat down until your thighs are parallel to the ground. Then ... you hold that position as long as you can. I couldn't even do it today without having a heart attack. When I was in my teens and twenties I could only last a minute or two before my leg muscles started twitching. Just for "fun" I ask you to try it yourself so that you can truly savor the picture I'm about to describe.

Well back in my time the Guinness Book of World Records was all the rage, and sure enough some truly insane goofball actually set the world record for the wall press. I think it was something utterly ridiculous like 24 hours! I ask you now to imagine the look of discomfort on the face of some misguided man who has been up all night squatting below a massive timer as it's ticked off 24+ hours above his head. That look was captured on film and printed in old editions of Guinness!

Would it count as off-topic if I said "I hate cute chess sets. I saw one in a gifte shoppe, downtown, that was frogs vs. mice, and I wanted to throw up?"

Hey! Stop throwing chess pieces at me! *g*

(It may be safe to say now that this thread has gone completely out of control. In only nine posts! A record! Yay!)

I like running the Center-Counter. I don't have time to deal with a ton of opening theory. So, I tend to pick openings with fewer options that get me to a decent middle game. I started playing again in 2000. I play in about 1-2 tournaments a year. It's a nice, inexpensive hobby where I can get sliced and diced by 12 year olds. *g*

New Hinda, who knows what they consider off-topic. That's the whole problem with their system. As some who have played in the USCF probably know, chess players can be some of the dumbest smart people known to man.

The part about the King's Indian Attack wasn't a joke, by the way. I'm a putz when it comes to openings; I'm horrible at them. So, better to play it safe. If I can get through the first dozen moves without making an ass of myself (and believe me, it's a big if), my middlegame's pretty decent. Or at least it was, ten years ago.

Haven't really played in a long time. Last game I played was on New Year's Eve. Made a couple of mistakes in the opening, but I set a couple of decent traps in the middlegame. My opponent blundered right into them (I was only planning to knock out a couple of attacks she was setting up, and instead I ended up taking her two bishops for nothin'). She said her mind wasn't really on the game, and I'll take her word for it. After all, giving a lady the benefit of the doubt should be every gentleman's CIVIC DUTY.

Back when i was playing in tournaments (1982 - 1989), most people where using queen pawn openings, so I'd usually use King pawn opennings as white (preferably King's Gambit, but about half the time black would play Sicilian against E4), to get the game into a contest of the brains at the board instead who can remember "book" moves. As black against D4, I usually went with Nimzo-Indian.

Hmmm, now something on Topic --- It would be interesting for someone to do a "spoof" WWII flick where today's "sensitivity" is injected into the American war effort.

I love the king's gambit as it leads to wild games full of sacrifices but I have to agree with Emanual Lasker and say that it is not sustainable, at least as I play it. It leaves the king side very exposed and the Falkbier Countergambit actually gives the tempo to black. Sorry, I forgot the actual topic.

I like Burger King fries and Wendy's are okay, but to be honest I was never that crazy about McDonald's fries.

Oh, sorry... didn't mean to get off topic there.

Last time I had Burger King fries (about 14 years ago, I'd guess) I found them rather dry. Do like McDonald's fries, but again, haven't had those in a while and last time I had one of their burgers, it was a 39 cent promotion, and thought it was over-priced at that. Haven't a Burger King burger since 1968 (that was the only time, too). Wendy's burgers are fine, but I usually just go out of my way for Whit Castle (though with sliders, once every two or three years seems to satisfy me).

What WAS the topic, anyway?

(Did you know they have Kosher McDonald's in Israel?) I like McDonald's fries too. Maybe five or six years ago, I went to McDonald's with a date who was a vegetarian. He insisted the smell of fries made hom sick and couldn't wait to get out of there. Burger Ranch has a better selection of salads.

McDonald's fries used to be great until the early 90's when they decided to make them healthier. The Burger King ones I can take or leave. I do kind of like Wendys'.

Even in the 1970s, Red Barn had a salad bar. In London, when I visited in 1998, there were Pizza-Pasta-Salad bars, all you could eat for five pounds, and they had QUITE a good selection of salad stuff.
