I just found out that Don "Mr. Wizard" Herbert has recently met his reward.
I used to watch him all the time on Nickelodean. I will always thank him for the introduction to the chemical properties of baking soda and vinegar. Made messes that are still legandary in my family.
A true icon.
Adios, Don. We loved you.

Perfect Tommy: Emilio Lizardo. Wasn't he on TV once? Buckaroo Banzai: You're thinking of Mr. Wizard. Reno: Emilio Lizardo is a top scientist, dummkopf. Perfect Tommy: So was Mr. Wizard.
Frickin' Aye.

Yeah.
The Wiz was a pre-cursor to MacGuyver in many ways.
I never missed an episode on Nick. To paraphrase Noah Cross in Chinatown "He MADE that network"
The fondest episodes were when he really pushed the envelope. Like when he turned himself in to a skeleton. I also love the one were he cooked breakfast for someone using solar ovens. That was interesting. I might try that one myself someday.
The intro used an interesting animation(Click Here)
They don't have any clips on youtube. But I found this advertisement that shows the highlights of some of his tricks. When they get more pyrotechnic back in the day, my parents were REALLY on guard(Click Here)
I never saw the 50's version of his show. But the one clip I did find I remember from the 80's version because he reenacted it(jokes too). Since VCR's were just starting and the internet 10 years away, you could get away with it.(Click Here)

I may be dating myself here (since no one else will date me I guess its ok) but I used to watch Don Herbert's original Watch Mr. Wizard show when I was a kid. It was great. Aired live and very low key, he would demonstrate how really cool things could be done with everyday objects and demonstrate scientific principles at the same time. Today's high flash kids' shows simply pale in comparison.

Last clip, I swear.
I found the last interview of Mr. Wizard. He doesn't look to bad. But you can tell that age has taken a toll on his hearing and memory is a little foggy.
But if you ever wanted to know everything about the guy and what he wanted to leave for posterity. Here is is:
