I just saw a trailer for this movie. It looks fantastic. A video game of a movie that is completely idiotic. I plan to see it many times.

When I saw the thread title I assumed you were talking about the Miike movie. Then I hit IMdB to check... now I'm afraid, very afraid *lol*
On one hand, its a Corey Yuen flick! On the other- Jamie Pressly and Eric Roberts?? What's that about?

| It doesn't surprise me, the best videogame adaptation so far are "Silent Hill" and "Resident Evil"... you know what I mean. And although I've never played this series of gamers, looks like the focused on having plenty of good looking chicks to show skin. I'm OK with that, but as a concept it's a little thin to build a movie. |

Huh- you're totally right. Neither is very good but they have atmosphere. But Mortal Combat is still the best- it wins on Christopher Lambert alone.

Mortal Kombat? Are you serious? I know even Ken has a soft spot for that one, but everytime I try to remember that one I stop when the techno music and the crude backgrounds come to my mind. Lambert was hilarious, but I'm not sure if that was intended.

Totally serious! It's a wonderfully craptacular flick- the kung fu is awful, but the Hong Kong weird vibe is definitely there. It's Enter The Dragon with stop motion monsters and the best "B" actor in history besides Shatner- how can that not rock! *g*

Speaking as someone who has seen DOA, it's not surprising that it's not a good movie, but it is surprising that it doesn't even have much camp value. To pull a quote from my own review:
quote: DOA: DEAD OR ALIVE plays like Uwe Boll and Andy Sidaris got together to make a tame PG-13 kung fu jigglefest with all the idiocy of Jean Claude Van Damme's STREET FIGHTER movie combined with the excessive music video styling and even greater insipidness of those CHARLIE'S ANGELS movies. This is usually the sort of guilty pleasure movie I can get behind - not this time. While DOA: DEAD OR ALIVE isn't nearly as terrible as either the STREET FIGHTER or, especially, the CHARLIE'S ANGELS movies, and do possess a few moments where you see what might have been, the overall stupidity proves more a detriment to the fun and it's all lacking that element of charm a mindlessly idiotic film of this sort desperately needs. That the story is crap, the dialog lousy, the fight choreography is stuff you've seen before done with more ingenuity to it, and the scantily clad women, gorgeous as they may, are actually overexposed, causes DOA to live up to the other meaning of its titular acronym.
I fully expected DOA: DEAD OR ALIVE to be mindless fluff but I guess I just expected a bit more creativity to the inane fluff shot with stylishly empty camera tricks given that the man behind the lens was Corey Yuen, a Hong Kong director no stranger to making mindless yet entertaining action flicks, some of which are overly stylized martial arts movies based around beautiful women in various states of undress. Ever see SO CLOSE, a less obnoxious Hong Kong variation on the CHARLIE'S ANGELS' films that Yuen did back in 2002? If so, then you know that Yuen could have made something out of a premise even as flimsy as this if he'd been allowed to. He is, after all, the same man that made the THE TRANSPORTER and the greatest motion picture in the history of motion pictures - NO RETREAT, NO SURRENDER. His heart just didn't seem into this one. At least it's well paced. It may not be very good but it keeps moving.
You can read the rest of the review (as well as my annihilation of DECK THE HALLS) here: http://www.foywonder.com/current_columns/foy_1206.html
Even director Corey Yuen has since disowned DOA, so that really ought to tell you something.

Mmmm... I can actually agree to a rough 66% of your afirmations. the kung fu is indeed awful (the fights concerning Sonja had me cracking up) and Christopher Lambert is indeed as fun to watch as Shatner. |

Mortal Kombat only plays well as a spoof. But I think that was intended (they just didn't want to make that too clear in order to bring in the target audience).
