I'm sure there are plenty of people on this site of all sites who have enjoyed various less than well regarded movies on occasion.

Off the top of my head I came with a trifecta of poorly regarded comedic attempts by action stars that I liked but very few seem to. I liked Hudson Hawk, I enjoyed Oscar and, god help me, I even liked Last Action Hero.

As for some of the movies others have mentioned, I too enjoyed the Naked Space Vam... I mean Lifeforce. The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen I have a feeling I might have enjoyed on some level if I weren't familiar with the original graphic novel.

Allright- I'll admit it, a lot of times I can be very forgiving to a movie if I think it has a really good premise, even if it isn't executed all too well. Millennium, the one with Cheryl Ladd and Kris Kristofferson, definitely falls into that camp for me, plus it's got all of that 80's style cheesiness to boot.

Along those lines I thought that the 'movie' called Stranded in Space on MST3K, which was actually a failed pilot for a TV show, would have made a fine show indeed and internally I excuse all of its flaws to a really miniscule budget ("hey- my buddy Dave has a really cool looking living room that he'll let us use for free. Why don't we shoot a bunch of location shots there...").

Wow, how could I forget Zardoz. I love it too, but in a much more masochistic way than the others mentioned here. It produces Deep Hurting. But the truth is (IMO) that Boorman is a good enough director that even his muddled absurd pretentious messes are far more interesting and watchable than the average hack director's muddled absurd pretentious messes.

I'll throw in my lot for Hudson Hawk. Yes, it's a stupid, stupid movie, and yes, Bruce Willis mugs like there's no tomorrow in it. However, it's a fun movie and just about everyone in it appears to be having a ball. As much as Richard E. Grant bitches about this movie in his book, he's either one of the greatest actors ever, or he had a better time than he's letting on.

I'll also throw a recent movie into the mix - The Golden Compass. I am aware that it's not a work of cinematic genius, but I refuse to watch it get lumped into the same category as Eragon just because it wasn't a blockbuster. It's an entertaining picture that deserved better than it got, plus watching it gave me an idea, which is the best thing any creative work can do for those who experience it.

You know Grand Funk, don't you? The wild, shirtless lyrics of Mark Farner? The bong-rattling bass of Mel Schacher? The ... adequate drumwork of Don Brewer?

The Village???

I really couldn't see the reason for the hate. It was incredibly well directed (say what you like about M Night Shymalan, he knows how to set up a good atmospheric shot), I thought the twist was genuinely clever and most of the criticisms, particularly the dialogue, were answered by the end of the film.

Last Action Hero is a mess, but it has a lot of good stuff. I wrote a review for the B-Movie Message Board ages ago linking it with the still-contentious-but-generally-more-well-liked Demolition Man. I mentioned that I thought both movies would have been improved if the two leads had switched places.

El Santo wrote a great review of Zardoz a while back, where he made the excellent point that it's *almost* a brilliant movie, but somehow, in missing by a couple of inches, it becomes a laughably awful one. http://www.1000misspenthours.com/reviews/reviewsn-z/zardoz.htm

As for the Golden Compass, I get the impression from everything I've read about the behind-the-scenes shenanigans that it was a decent movie before the studio got cold feet and ordered big chunks of it cut out. I'm waiting on a director's cut before I see it.

I would have to chime in for The Core as well. I honest thing that the only person who thought they were making a serious disaster film was the director. Everyone is having may to much fun for it to be otherwise.

I've also been a long time fan of Moontrap, even if it's silly and very much a product of the 80s, love to do a review on it sometime. I rather enjoyed the otherwise poor A Sound of Thunder, and I think I might be the only person who did.

I'll toss in my usual (lonely) applause for Proof of Life. No matter how many times I see it (about a dozen, by now) I still think it's a first rate thriller, Meg Ryan notwithstanding.

Also I'm a big Wolf fan, probably the best movie of its kind ever made.

What can I say? Yes, I admit it, I enjoyed Legend starring Tom Cruise. There were two things that grabbed me. First off, the effort they took in producing the sets (reminded me of The Company of Wolves another movie that got panned) was great. The second thing was not Tom Cruise (who looked kind of scrawny in the movie) but Tim Curry. I thought his make-up was excellent! As far I was concerned he stole the show. And I must admit Mia Sara wasn't that bad, but the set design and Tim Curry was what got me.

Let's see... a few others have named: The Village, Legend (Director's Cut ONLY), and Hudson Hawk, which I believe may not have been such a bomb if they'd marketed it as what it was: a smart-ass comedy with some action scenes thrown in.

Of course, let me run it into the ground: my favorite guilty pleasure may always be The Black Hole.

In the Company of Wolves got panned? I didn't know that. And that's too bad, because I liked it a lot. Ditto Wolf as Zombie mentioned (just too bad about Jack's makeup). I've always felt that the werewolf genre owns a disproportionate amount of good-to-great films, beating even the zombie genre.

Speaking of Jack Nicholson, I was just at a noir website and I remembered The Two Jakes, the nigh-universally-panned sequel to Chinatown. Well it ain't Chinatown, but nothing is, except Chinatown. In the meantime, this film is ludicrously underrated. It has problems, but it's still very solid...but then, I tend to like noir films unconditionally.

Ooh! And then there's Lucas's mostly-forgotten The Radioland Murders, which I saw and enjoyed as a kid...I might feel differently these days, but I didn't get the hate at the time.

Yet another one: The Ladykillers, which labours under the curse of being a remake of a classic AND the worst Coen brothers movie...but the worst Coen Brothers movie is still better than 90% of the comedies made in the last 30 years.

I don't think that one counts though. No one hates The Black Hole! It is a guilty pleasure because it's cheesy and silly- it's far from a great movie. But I don't think most people, and certainly not B movie fans, regard it as a truly bad movie. And it's a lot of fun. I would put Tron in the same category.
