The much too young creator (52) of The Rocketeer has passed away of leukemia. Aside from inspiring a pretty good action movie of that title, Mr. Stevens also helped inspire a mini-vogue in interest about '50s pin-up queen Bettie Page, who was used as the model for a Rocketeer character. In this he was helped by his then wife, b-movie starlet Brinke Stevens, who would pose for him as he drew his lamentable handful of comics.
Mr. Stevens is sadly the second comics icon to pass away in less than a month. Howard the Duck creator Steve Gerber passed away on February 20th. While Howard is easily Gerber's most famous creation, I'll always remember him best for a hilarious run of Defenders comics, in which he pushed the line between normal superhero goofiness and outright parody with incredible skill, and during a period where that sort of tongue in cheek writing just wasn't normally done. (The fact that Luke Cage was a member of the team during this period certainly helped sustain my interest.)
PEGGY: I don't see how having a girl on the team would ruin it. Did a woman judge ruin the Supreme Court? HANK: Yes, and that woman's name was Earl Warren.

52? I'm 52...but, not nearly so talented. R.I.P sir, you're work will be missed.
