Although in general I like traditional orchestral scores for movies I really do think that more electronic and/or rock scores work great for horror and suspense. Susperia, Halloween, Exorcist, Phantasm... they all had very memorable music that worked great in context.

Suspiria is perhaps my favorite soundtrack, though i must say there were parts of There Will Be Blood by the Radiohead guy that were pretty attention grabbing.
most of Ennio Morricone's stuff had a creepy feel, even when he was doing westerns.

| Vertigo always gives me the creeps. The opening screaching the that slow pulsing rhythm really give this great movie power and suspense. |

I also liked Goblin's "L'alba dei morti viventi" from the original "Dawn of the Dead" (1978) - Amazingly creepy.

Oh yeah, the DotD is a good soundtrack. It's sort of cheesy and dated sounding but in a really cool way, at least for my taste. Unlike, say, most of Tangerine Dream's work. I do like the Thiefsoundtrack. It's not creepy though. *g*

Might be worthy of a second thread, but I always got confused which Dawn of the Dead tracks were Goblin and which were library tracks.
The library tracks Romero selected for Night of the Living Dead ('68 version) were excellent. |

Kolchack was blessed with two great themes; both his TV movie them and program theme are very nifty.
Experiment in Terror by Mancini is a great score, used as the theme music for WGN's Creature Features when I was a kid.
PEGGY: I don't see how having a girl on the team would ruin it. Did a woman judge ruin the Supreme Court? HANK: Yes, and that woman's name was Earl Warren.

| Morricone's score for The Thing always gave me the creeps -- it's weird, but it matches the movie's style better than a conventional score would, I think. Carpenter made the right choice there. |

I think most of that score was ghost-written and performed by Carpenter himself (and his cohort Alan Howarth), I really do. The similarities to their other work are just too obvious. I strongly suspect Morricone wound up acting more as an arranger/orchestrator for the few orchestral bits...
And welcome- "Gabba gabba, one of us " *g*

I have to agree there. The score sounds too much like Carpenter's style. If Morricone did write it, it probably was following close instructions from Carpenter.
Still, the final result sounds way better than most Carpenter stuff. You have to give Morricone some credit there. The end credits, where a single instrument seems to fake a heartbeat never fails to make feel anguish. |

Well, doing a little internet digging seems to indicate that most people think the score really is Morricone's. In fact, there are references to a falling out between him and Carpenter, with JC saying basically "If I wanted that kind of sound I'd have done it myself!" Which makes a certain sense. I seem to also have heard tales that it was Ennio that got mad because after hiring him Carpenter stood over his shoulder and forced him to do a score that sounded like one he himself would write. Who knows- although now that I think about it I think John references the first version on the DVD commentary.
Either way you're right- the score has a lot more depth and soul than any of Carpenter's typical stuff (as much as I like his typical stuff).

| I have to do some digging myself. I'm sure there are lots of interesting stories to be told about that film. |

quote: It was the fourth movement of Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique (actually, the opening of it), adapted by Wendy Carlos. There's no soundtrack for the movie per se, but I do know that Carlos's unused score (including the bits that were used) is available as part of a compilation CD, and I wouldn't be surprised if you could download the other tracks off Amazon.
Hmmmmmm, may need to spend a coupla bucks.
Actually there was a soundtrack album, on vinyl. I've still got it around somewhere. |
