| I remember watching The Thing with some mates and the general feeling was that it was weird that the score was Morricone's as it sounded more like Carpenter than Carpenter. From what I recall of the making of stories Morricone had composed a whole score for the movie but Carpenter chose not to use the majority of it, as he thought it was not necessarily bad but too orchestral and big for the movie and not right for the claustrophobic and suspenseful atmosphere he wanted. He picked the part of the score he liked the most (Which sounded most like his own work) and stretched it out over the movie. Morricone was supposedly the one miffed at Carpenter for not using the major part of the score he had created for the movie and with which he himself was quite pleased. Anyway, it was a great creepy soundtrack. |

Denny Zeitlin's score for Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) was great. Didn't necessarily give me the creeps, but I sure it must have given somebody out there the willies.
Weirdest thing is that it was his only film score. His only other work in the entertainment industry: Sesame Street. |
