A Frankenstein Film is a film where a) the moral is "There Are Things Man Was Not Meant To Know" b) the moral is written across the screen in flaming letters ten feet high; and c) where the antagonist is ironically done in by his creation.
Useful term?

That could fit FORBIDDEN PLANET (for what happened to the Krell, moreso than Morbius). Oddly, a lot of "Frankenstein" movies (movies with the Frankenstein Monster) probably wouldn't fit in the catagory (They're just "monster movies" about someone who slaps together bodyparts -- no "lesson" just mayhem).

Forbidden Planet helped create the archetype though. At least, with respect to sci-fi in film.

Ironic - but true. It was the original premise of the "Frankenstein" story that gave the creature its' pathos. Most times, it was just mere capitalization for a buck.

While that has been a theme in several Frankenstein films, it is not a theme in all of them. Witness, for example, PROTOTYPE. To me, a Frankenstein film is one where a mad scientist creates life, usually to his sorrow.
To me, what motivated Mary Shelley, the creator of Frankenstein, was that she had a morbid fear of giving birth, as many women of the type died in childbirth. She had recently had a miscarriage prior to writing the novel (which was polished by her uncredited husband Percy). |
