I'm listening to Alice Cooper singing "He's Back (the Man behind the Mask)" - soundtrack to Friday the 13th part VI. The movie is just as bad as you'd expect (Lyz at aycyas has a splendid review), but the music is actually very good (if you like Alice Cooper). And we know that Rocky III and IV also featured very good music... so, what other movies have soundtracks or just title songs that's much, much, much better than the movie?

Tuff Nuff-Fabalous Thunderbirds
A song that was featured in Gung-ho(the 80's version) and has played over and over on various television shows is pretty good.

A good example is Supergirl. A rather stupid movie (although Helen Slater is beautiful and gets the character just right) but Jerry Goldsmith's music is great. Its so good that it has been used in other movies.
The 1966 Casino Royal is widly panned (but I kind of like it) but its music, from start to finish, is fantastic. The opening theme really jumps and it also features The Look Of Love. |

Speaking of Jerry Goldsmith, his scores for Rambo - First blood Part II and Rambo III are easily the best action scores I've ever listened to. And they happen to accompany two movies that are utter crap, specially the second.
It should be easy to get more Goldsmith ones, as I remember him being extremely prolific, and not particularly picky about the movies he scored.
As for other examples, I remember the Mel Gibson version of Mutiny at the Bounty being pretty bad, but it boasted a wonderful score by Vangelis. Like Alexander. |

I'm a big AC/DC fan so for me, it would easily be Maximum Overdrive.
Also, Roadhouse has some pretty good music from the Jeff Healey band.
And speaking of Goldsmith, he scored Star Treks 1, 5, 8, 9 and 10 ( 5 and 10 are probably the worst Star Trek movies and certainly 9, and some would say 1 deserve [dis]honorable mention). |

Neville, I liked The Bounty. But you are 100% about the music. When I first heard it. I thought it was all wrong because they included synthesized music in a story that took place before electricity.
But it won me over because it had a feeling of foreboding. That something was ABOUT to happen. That something was simmering. And that it would end badly. And it had a feeling of the tropics. So in the end, it worked.

Another one that might be controversial is Escape from New York because people either like or hate that movie. The techno music works for this dypsonian adventure. And I've seen it used on other youtube videos by ameteurs.

And there's Henry Mancini's Silver Streak theme. I think its a great train tune. Unfortunately, the movie didn't do too hot.

You know, I checked out The bounty at the IMDB right after posting and was shocked at how many possitive reviews it has. All I can remember are questionable directing choices and weak acting by Gibson, maybe I should watch it again. I'd still keep Alexander on my list, though. The movie was a stinker, but the Vangelis score was great.
And I think I have another one, Lifeforce. Personally, I like the movie a lot, but one of the most shocking things about it is that it has an incredible symphonic score a la John Williams... by Henry Mancini! |

Speaking of Vangelis scores.... 1492 was a colossal disappointment, but the soundtrack album is fantastic.
I've said this in a review, but I'll repeat. Maybe I'm not in the majority, but I thought The Last Temptation of Christ was a misguided misfire (maybe I'm mistaken, or I misread some of the— okay, I'll stop). But the score, by Peter Gabriel, was a jaw-dropper. If you haven't gotten the score (it's in the rock section under Gabriel's name, as "Passion: Music from The Last Temptation of Christ), I recommend you plunk down your twenty bucks; it'll be money well spent. |

I have "sounds of sci-fi" on my iTunes list, and I must say that adding the theme from Terminator 2 to Robo-Man made for an... interesting juxtaposition.

Basil Poledouris made a career of this. Both the themes from Conan and Red Dawn were very good. When the Aggie marching band used to play the end score from Red Dawn, it would really send the chills from the nape to the small of the back. The movies...eh. Red Dawn is particularly silly dated oldie.

I guess Flash Gordon and 1984's Dune would also qualify. They both have their fans (I particularly like Dune, despite its abuse of voiceovers and expository dialog), but in both cases the scores are more accomplished than the movies.
Queen's score for Flash is classic, and the Dune soundtrack features everything but the kitchen sink, from orchestral music and electric guitars (courtesy of Toto) to electronic music contributed by Brian Eno, I think. |

To be honest - I'm not a huge fan of the Johnny Depp version of "Sweeney Todd" - but the music has always been a favorite of mione.

Wholehearted agreement with many of the films already mentioned. If ever there was a case where great music almost rescued a bad movie, it was Basil Poledouris' score for Conan the Barbarian. Queen's score for Flash Gordon was also outstanding, as was Jerry Goldsmith's score for Star Trek: TMP (later reused for ST:Final Frontier).
How about Streets of Fire? Not just Ry Cooder's score itself, but also the songs written for the movie (by everyone from Jim Steinman to Stevie Nicks to Dan Hartman).

| There are some movies where I definitely recommend the soundtrack, but can't recommend the movie. Among those that come to mind are: DAMIEN: THE OMEN PART II, BLUES BROTHERS 2000, SHOCK TREATMENT (the Rocky Horror sequel), and CROSSROADS (Ry Cooder soundtrack!). |
