A long time ago, I just had to ask my father.
"Can we connect our Apple []c to our television?" I mean, that was what we were doing with our Atari. So why not the Apple? He said it was possible but not very practical. We wouldn't get much more than what we were getting now. And Atari was portable and could be disconnected easily. The Apple was bulky and couldn't be moved around.
I accepted that. Besides, it was the mid-eighties and people thought it was cool that we could play Castle Wolfenstein and make fancy things with print-shop. So what if the monitor only displayed green.
Luckily, the next year the point became moot. We got a color monitor for the thing. And any thought of connecting it to our Zenith died.
Until last week...
The Internet has become more and more diverse in options you have for viewing movies. In particular, whole television shows have been transplanted to the Internet.
Right now. The entire MacGyver series have been uploaded to YouTube. And ABC's website, has every episode of the original Star Trek. Yours for the taking.
Recently, I've gotten in to Hulu. I used one of their links on my post about Basil Wallace. But lately, I've been using it to watch episodes of shows that I want to see.
All you have to do is shut down your screen saver, press play and hit the wide screen button to fill your entire screen.
It struck me I was doing this in my office. While it is comfortable, I should be watching this stuff in my living room. So I'm thinking that I should find a way to link my television to my computer. Then when I am free and in the mood, I start a movie and then watch it over in my wide screen television. Then when the movie is over, go back to my office.
I could even use my laptop so I wouldn't need to go near my office.
We so many options for web entertainment:

Free Movies:

I doubt I am the first one to think about this. But what do you guys think? Isn't this what we talked about? How home entertainment systems were going to go anyway? Your television would download movies and shows off the net.

Oh definitely. I have a front projector for my main TV. Everything goes through it- my pc, my HD DVR/Cable, the PS3, there's nothing I can't watch or stream through it. it's very fun, but streaming from the internet is still pretty low-fi in terms of video quality. It's fun for hard to see items though. Also, Comcast and Sony have tens of thousands of items available to stream on demand. So I think we're close to a time when live TV will be something of a thing of he past- all new shows will just become available as files on a server somewhere and you'll stream them on demand.

So it will be that fans of shows will wait for a show to become available on a server. Then download it at their leisure.
Instead of waiting for it to air on a network and praying that a DVR catches it.
Ah, the times we live in.
For now, click on the pictures on what we can do in the mean time.

Sling Box is pretty sweet too- I don't have one but it lets you take anything on your DVR and send it through the net to your laptop- anywhere. So if you, say, have to go on a trip and you're going to miss some obscure show you love, no worries- you can watch it with no hassles.
The downside of all of this access is that it almost makes you want to junk it all because the sheer enormity of content you can watch gets overwhelming. I really worry about the stuff I could be getting done instead of watching old concerts on VH1 Classic.

You're a sick man. You know that right? ;-)
But you're right. That Sling Media is pretty sweet.

Foy, you better be taking notes.
I don't know EXACTLY what you do. But I got a feeling that television stations are going to be going through a paradigm shift. And you might be in the middle of it.

I'm following a lot of series that have limited (or none) distribution in my country, so I download them together with fan subtitles (I should point out that doing so is legal in Spain) and then watch them in a tiny DVD / DivX player connected to my dinning room TV.
The player it's starting to misbehave, and I'm planning to buy one with USB support next time, so I can transfer the videos from my PC in a USB memory stick. A friend of mine bought a very expensive projector, and it's a blast to watch anything projected into a wall he keeps deliberately blank. Problem is, he recently upgraded his computer and he's having problems connecting it to his new videocard. |
