I'm not religious by nature. But I do believe there is some sort of order in the universe that is beyond one's self.
And one day last week, while not earth shattering, would fortify that belief.
Because last month, HBO decided to play the Steven Seagal flick Marked for Death on one of its channels every day. Not a bad choice. It was definitely one of the more fun movies of Steve's career.
After enjoying a showing of it, I log on to Angonybooth.com. and find that the people over there had reviewed it in a mini-recap. Well...what a coincidence. They hit a lot of good points and gave full credit the the movie's villain Screwface played by Basil Wallace.
Although I do have qualms with the review:
The fact that the Jamaican gang keeps calling Seagal and his family boodcloths is left unexplored.
The Jewelery Store sequence. In the movie, the cops were out to bust Hatcher for being a vigilante. You think they would have their chance when Seagal tears up half of Chicago in his truck and then plows through a jewelry story and wrecks the place with gunfire. But the whole sequence is forgotten. I guess Chicago is REALLY that corrupt.
During the suiting up for battle sequence where Seagal was putting silencers on guns, there were a lot of things left unexplored. Like where was all this taking place? Since Seagal's friend played by Keith David was a high school football coach, I'm forced to conclude that it was in a high school shop classroom. And that's even weirder because some of the equipment was made expressly for gunsmithing.
And what was the deal with the side of beef that Seagal had on the wall? Supposedly used to practice firing his machine gun. But where did he get it? How did he transport it to the machine shop? And what did he tell the people where he bought the beef from what he was going to use it for?
Supposedly they snuck all this gear in to Jamaica by disassembling their guns and hiding it inside camera equipment. Okay, I could believe that. But...what did you hide Screwface's head in to sneak it back over the boarder? Did they dip it in lacor and tell the authorities it was a voodoo novelty gift?
And no. There was not dick shot in the movie. Screwface was wearing some ultra tight swimming trunks. Maybe Screwface and Gold metalist Phelps should hang out. From what I hear, they both have the same interests.
And thoroughly untouched was Seagal being portrayed as a girl magnet. All the women in the movie look at Seagal like he's the last man on earth. Maybe its the ponytail?
But lets get back to Basil Wallace.
Basil Wallace isn't a name most recognized. But he worked for this film. He's got some strange facial ticks that make him seem off when he talks. And he chose to recite his lines to other actors, he always was sure to be one inch away from their faces. But he did a lot for his role. And following the rule that action films are only as good as your villain, you have to give him credit for making Marked for Death the great piece of 80's cinema candy that it is.
Someone compared his performace to De Niro's Al Capone.

But later that day, I settled down to watch my favorite television show Burn Notice. And who should show up? Basil Wallace. He looks non the worse for wear. But the ravages of time have taken their toll. He's definately not a young man anymore. But interestingly enough, he's playing a role thats similar to Seagal's. Namely, he plays a father trying to get justice for his family by traveling to a foriegn land.
If you want to see what he looks like now, click on the below link and fast forward 4:30 in.

So what where the chances?

Some good points. They recently started showing "Burn Notice" on the C/S Origin station, here, in the Philippines. I'll have to keep an eye out for Mr. Wallace. Unfortunately, the clip referred to can only be viewed within the United States.

I guess the best I can do is a picture from a image site.
