The trailers don't do much for me, either. Fortunately, even with my new found poverty in the Philippines :) - I can view a copy of the movie the day after it opens for about $1.40 - so no real loss one way or the other. SE Asia has it's benefits...

Isn't this statement self referentially absurd? Isn't Shatnerism itself an affront to Shatnersim?

Well saw it tonight in a shockingly empty theater. Seriously, there were about 50 people there on a Saturday night. And guess what- it kicked my butt. Christopher Pine makes a terrific young Kirk- who'd-a-thunk-it. Whoever cut the trailers for this film needs to be dragged behind a barn and shot. Good action, good acting, real drama and most important the TOS chemistry is there. Well, except for Uhura. Some weirdness going on there but I won't spoil the film yet. Also, there are some HUGE plot hols but really, there are in just about every Trek film when you break them down. As a reboot I'm psyched to see where things go next. Right on J.J.!

I also saw it this weekend, and had a great time with it. The camerawork was a bit too flashy -sometimes literally- for my personal taste, but the acting found a good compromise between homage and effectiveness, the action quickened my pulse and it's got everything that made Star Trek so damn fun in its time.
I say go check it out, Trekkies or not. |

I liked it but didn't love it. The opening sequence was killer, then it slowly went downhill from there. Any movie that features more scenes of Kirk in CGI action scenes than in scenes of Kirk bantering with Spock clearly doesn't get what the whole Trek universe is about.
Pine was basically just a frat boy in space. Of course, that was on purpose; I don't hold him nearly as responsible as I do the writers and Abrams, who clearly wanted to strip the Kirk character of all his mystique and dumb his character down to the lowest common denominator. By comparison, Shatner's Kirk is positively Picardian.
As for the actor playing Spock... never mind Nimoy comparisons, this guy couldn't even hold a candle to the Vulcan from the TNG episode "Lower Decks." Dull, humorless, completely lacking in gravitas.
On the brighter side, Urban and Pegg, as expected, stole every scene they were in, Saldana (rrRowwr!) made a great Uhuru IMHO (except for that hair), and I especially liked that guy who played Chekov... a nice job of getting the character right without simply doing a flat-out impersonation of the actor who came before him.
Overall, pretty ok, but nothing earth-shattering (if you'll pardon the pun). |

I never thought I see such a comparison...and feel compelled to agree. Mind you, not see the thing yet...but just from the clips so far...yeah. We'll see how it goes. BTW, how did the 'Goth Romulin' go over?

quote: Is it just me, or does the red car scene in the trailer basically look like a video for Rush's "Red Barchetta"?
I thought something like that when I saw the movie, that they should have played Red Barchetta over the scene instead of what they did. For me, what really made it was the highway cop on the hoverbike, which looks like a smaller version of the vehicle the guy plays chicken with in Red Barchetta. On the downside, the car is a Corvette, not a Ferarri.
You know Grand Funk, don't you? The wild, shirtless lyrics of Mark Farner? The bong-rattling bass of Mel Schacher? The ... adequate drumwork of Don Brewer? |

Hopefully in the next movie they lighten up on the slapstick comedy. It really killed the pace of the movie. "Oh no, we're flying into a trap AND LOOK AT MY COMICAL BALLOON HANDS!"

Saw it yesterday. Hard to say what my feelings were. But when I left the theater and drove home, I felt extremely depressed.
This was a movie that had everything going for it. Not all of the actors were perfect, but any flaws in their performances were due more to the writing than to the actors (especially in the case of Scotty and Chekov). I liked Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto's takes on Kirk and Spock, Zoe Saldana was a wonderful Uhura, John Cho made Sulu into a sword-wielding bad-ass, and Karl Urban was PERFECT as Bones. There was a definite feeling that the baton had been passed, and these young Turks could carry the load.
But the whole time-travel angle left a bad taste in my mouth. Was this a parallel universe? If so, how does the original Spock feel about being trapped forever here? And if it's the original Star Trek universe, then EVERYTHING we've seen before has been wiped out. That's not a slap to the face; it's a sucker-punch to the gut.
The problem was, I found myself asking, was this movie anywhere near as good as Star Trek II (my pick for the best of the bunch, by a wide margin)? It damn well should have been. And it wasn't even close.
I wish the best for this new crew. And I'm hoping against hope that this re-boot does indeed bring the series back to life — instead of killing it altogether. |

Spock seemed pumped at the idea of propagating the species. I wonder if Romulans are compatible breeding partners or if they're too far removed from Vulcans to be considered the same species.

As a lapsed Trekkie, I do remember that Saavik was originally conceived (pardon the pun) as half-Vulcan, half-Romulan. Besides, if Vulcans and Humans can mix, certainly Vulcans can mix with Romulans, who are much closer in physiology.
I wouldn't have a problem with what I described, if they'd just let us know that we were in a parallel universe. Okay, Spock's entered a parallel universe. Nero was too crazy to figure it out (and he didn't care anyway). Spock was the last surviving member of the old guard, and maybe he was feeling like he'd outgrown his usefulness, like Kirk at the beginning of Star Trek II. So, he can't go back to his own world, and back there, everyone believes he died a hero's death. Not a bad way to leave. And now, even with the tragedy of this universe's Vulcan being destroyed, he can make a difference by jump-starting the race again. He can begin a new life.
The sad thing is, I don't think the filmmakers thought this through, as evidenced by how shallow much of the rest of the movie is. That's why I think this movie blew it, even when it had everything it needed to be an instant classic. |
