I never took it as being an alternate universe. To me it's an altered timeline of the same universe- which amounts to the same thing in the long run. But, since TOS seemed to make it pretty clear that the original crew never served on the Enterprise together as cadets you have to take the whole thing with a grain of salt anyway. To me, it's a reboot, the old rules don't apply, and that's fine. It's a better approach than the egregious ret-conning of Enterprise.

Brad, I think you are over thinking it. They basically wanted to re imagine the original series. So they kept some stuff, and they got rid of some stuff. To pacify the original series zealots, they throw us an "alternate time line/universe" bone.
I thought it was absolutely fantastic. I had serious doubts about Pine, but I thought he completely nailed Kirk's best qualities. Quinto was solid, as was the rest of the cast, my only complaint being Scotty and Bones were a bit underused. I especially thought Bruce Greenwood was solid as Pike.
Personally I have no problem with them rewriting the Star Trek canon, if they do it entertainingly, which they did. |

I was pleasantly surprised by the movie. First, it moved and didn't feel bloated. The actors they picked matched their roles well except for Uhura. She tended to annoy me more than anything. Really the film is an origin story with all of the pros and cons of such a film. The main con in this case is that the villain is really a throw away item to the rest of the film. The film did a good job of introducing the new Star Trek universe and the characters. I was apprehensive about the time travel plot line, but have to admit it worked well. Plus, my wife liked it which was kind of surprising.
Personally, I thought the humor was about right and I enjoyed the balloon hands. :-)
My main negative was the blasted lens flares. You have great sets and scenes inhibited by ridiculous flares all over the place.
