I'm watching Monster Ark on Sci-Fi and they just had a scene where the arciologists discover the entrance to a tomb and the native laborers took one look at the seal (which the "scientists" couldn't read) and start babbling about "danger" and "curses".
OK, this has happened in MANY movies; the natives KNOW about what's inside the tomb/vault/cave/whatever, but NEVER mentioned it to the "heros". Or is it because the "scientists" were too stupid/proud to ask?
What other movies have a scene like this where the people who (We assume) did YEARS of research have no clue, but the native population could give VOLUMES of information if someone would only ask?

| It's just one of those conventions that don't make much sense by themselves but do their job well. They foreshadow the explorers are not ready for what dangers they may encounter plus they link them with the "intolerant white men" stereotype, so we don't get too upset when they buy the farm. |

Yeah, its unavoidable. The science guys are totaly immune to the possability the 'primitives' could be better informed then the 'moderns'.

Hmmm, many decades ago I read an artical in TV Guide that was titled "You Always Know Who Will Be The Blob's First Slurp".

There's a priceless episode of Red Dwarf where the ship robots have wired the auto-destruct system to the food vending machines. The crew try a desperate tactic to avert disaster... and it fails. Holly (the ship's computer) can't turn it off. The crew are resigned to die, the countdown hits zero... and nothing happens. Whereupon the following dialogue exchange takes place:
Rimmer: "The bomb didn't go off!"
Holly: "We don't have a bomb. I jettisoned it last year."
Rimmer: "But why didn't you tell us, you stupid git!"
Holly: "You didn't ask."
