Back when I was a youngie I attended a showing of Jaws 3-D. Little did I realize it at the time, but this would turn out to be my first and last "enhanced" filmgoing experience (to date). Not only was the Quaid-Gossett turkey the only 3-D film I ever saw in a theater, it was the only movie I ever saw that employed any gimmick of any kind. I was never around for Sensurround. I turned my nose up at Smell-o-Rama. And William Castle's classic cinematic gimmics was well before my time... though the thought of being present at a special showing of The Tingler gives me a certain... well, you know.

Does anyone here have firsthand accounts to share? What were the weirdest and most off-the-wall movie gimmicks you ever witnessed? Bubble and smoke machines for 3-D movie showings? Actors in costumes racing through the theaters at key moments or jumping out and scaring the audience? And if you ever found yourself in the position where you were the one showing the movie (say, you worked as an usher in a theater or you sponsored a particular film at a movie fest) did everything go as planned or did any of the gimmicks backfire?

I remember seeing ads for a Friday 13 horror show that had this gimic, but I didn't go see it. (Darn!)

Something Wierd videos have DVDs of intermission films and one announces pictures of the Weeki Wachee Springs mermaids on the popcorn boxes. This was a special treat for me since I grew up and live in Florida and have a vague memory of this promotion.
