Has anyone ever extensively planned out an R-rated film series?
First Blood almost did not produce a sequel at all, since but for a split decision from a preview audience, Rambo would have died.
Death Wish came out in 1974, but no sequel followed till 1982.
Roderick Thorp only wrote two novels about Joe Leland, so the makers of the film Die Hard did not much to guide them for sequels.
Compare this to many PG and PG-13 series had a tightly planned out arc: George Lucas planned Star Wars as a trilogy New Line film its LOTR series simultaneously MVL has set up several films to segue into the Avengers Superman I and II filmed simultaneously J.K. Rowling will have all of her Harry Potter novels filmed The Twilight series filmed simultaneously
Many R-rated adventure films did not adapt previously packaged properties. Some did adapt novels, but many of them adapted singleton novels not part of a series. Ernest Tidyman created Shaft in a novel, and eventually wrote about six more novels, but that seems the exception. Had the Mack Bolan, the Executioner film made it to the screen, that might have served as another exception, but it did not, and with the current backlash against theatrically released R-rated films, it probably will not soon. Farmhouse films will probably adopt an ironic approach to the Penetrator. |
