Unless they finally created an Oscar cathegory for "Best talent scout", this is very unfair. I mean, for all the charming movies he made, he's always been a rather mediocre film director. As for his opus as a producer, the least said the better.

Face it, the moment they gave Dino De Laurentis a lifetime Oscar a few years back, they opened the floodgates for Roger Corman.

While I have always admired Corman for his ability to stretch a dollar, I find nearly all of his movies and projects to be very harsh, cold blooded and hard to watch. Thus as skilled as he is with budgets he lacks skill as a director. Spike Lee showed in "She's Gotta have it" that great characters and stories can be created with very little money. You need wit, love and imagination not just keen accounting skills.
