Another factor working against possible commercial success is the content. There is nudity and some brutal fight scenes. A man thrown into meat grinder and coming out as ground beef on the other side. Broken bones at every turn. Body parts strewn around a train station. Hookers servicing males. You're looking at an "R" rating which ultimately can hurt box office if not given right type of marketing.
......................................................... If they did not do rated R in 1994, these people probably will not do it rated R in 2011 or later. |

quote: "The Shadow" is currently set up at Sony with Sam Raimi (having recently walked from the "Spider-Man" films) lined up to produce. However, we are hearing from our sources that Raimi is itching to get back in the director's chair ASAP and wants "The Shadow" to be his next directorial feature.
This tidbit has suddenly re-ignited my interest, regardless of rating. I was posting a bit before that most of the trouble with the 94' Shadow was its hack of a director, Russell "RE Extinction" Mulcahy. It did have its good points (as I recall Ken noted) but the odd bits of humor and laid back repartee would have been much more appropriate in an adaptation of The Spirit than The Shadow. (Frank Miller could learn a bit from the director of ‘Curse of Tut's Tomb’, how sad is that.)
Anyway, Raimi has always been one of my favorite directors. Even his flops like Crimewave are more interesting on a creative level than drivel like Avatar; here's hoping.

| If this is true, then Raimi has been after The Shadow for many years, his Darkman was supposed to be a direct adaptation of adaptation of The Shadow, but in the end he couldn't afford to buy the rights. IMHO, Darkman is one of his best movies, I'd like to see what he can do now with the same material and a big budget. |

Part of what stifled the Baldwin version of the Shadow:
1. they admitted that they had to get a PG-13 rating-they had a tie-in toyline and, with Alec Baldwin in the role, probably figured they could bring in a female demographic (not to stereotype all women as "shrinking violets)
2. adventure films had moved away from the sullen, driven seeker of justice. People point to Die Hard as an example of this. Die Hard cast Bruce Willis, then known for Moonlighting. Many people feel that moving away from the sullen, stoic, driven seeker of justice enabled the genre to attract less polticially conservative viewers. For an illustrative example, compare the first Lethal Weapon (1987), released one year before Die Har, with its sequels, released after Die Hard. Notice how comedic the Lethal Weapon series grew when compared to the first, pre-Die Hard, deadly serious first entry. |

Unfortunately, since 1994, the perceived need to attract younger audiences and female viewers has seemed to have grown-look at Harry Potter and Twilight. |

I've never read the Shadow books, so I have no idea if the graphic violence is part of the character. I have heard the radio show which of necessity had to keep the gruesomeness down quite a bit. Of course, I'm not really sure which came first, the show or the books...
One definite thing in the 94 version's favor: an excellent, haunting score by Jerry Goldsmith. And even though miscast, Jonathan Winters was fun. "Why am I talking to the back of your head?" |

| The Compton Moore Shadow debuted in Fame and Fortune Magazine in 1929, before the radio show use of the Shadow for Detective Story Hour. |

Not so much gruesome, as unrepentant. Whereas say, Batman holds himself to a strict code of non-lethal force, The Shadow would simply shoot a killer in the face and be done with it.
