How do think this period will be remembered in the history of cinema and entertainment?
Fondly. Derisively. Apathetically.
I'd like to know.
I think the one thing that will be remembered is the shaky cam. Ever since the Bourne Supremacy, directors seemed to want to cover up their inept action scenes by shaking the camera around. Other films followed suit like Batman Begins. If we get away from that, it will be because people(and critics) have more and more been calling out this slipshod tactic.
It will also be known as the 80's revivial. Because throughout the decade producers reached back to that time period to re-animate what was once thought dead. Transformers, The Dukes of Hazard and the upcoming A-Team all came back for one last hurrah.

I believe this period is going to be remembered well for certain genres.
Super hero films will be seen as big as well as fantasy films.
I don't know if other areas fared as well. Action films, except for a few exceptions, were down. Comedies are always in the eye of the beholder so I don't whether to say they did well or not in general. Personally I found them to have gone rock bottom.
Horror films have descended to horror porn.
Grown-up films have lacked mainly because Hollywood lacks grown-ups.
Sci-fi had a handful of decent films but nothing much to call great. The Matrix trilogy committed suicide before our eyes. Lucas turned out two final mediocre films. The Pitch Black films were at least interesting. Star Trek stumbled towards death until Abrams gave it a shot of life. But, it's still dicey on what they can do with it. Most of the rest have been CGI festivals without plot.
War films pretty much ceased to exist. They were either action schlock or political screeds. Blackhawk Down has been about the only solid war film of the decade.
Depending on the types of films you like will determine how you remember the decade. Personally, it was a decent decade of film.

| I think television from the last decade will be remembered much more positively than film. |

Early on I might have agreed with that. But I think when you go back to view a lot of the "classic" TV from this decade, it's going to be seen as lacking. Actually, with the fractured TV audiences of today, people might remember TV more fondly, but everyone will have a different reason why. :-)

It will also be the decade that Chinese Cinema wore out its welcome. Its high water mark being Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
It will also be known for the rise and fall of the Documentary genre. Be it Bowling for Columbine or Inconvenient Truth they definately had a good run. But unfortunately, its become fodder for internet chatrooms. I think now people believe that big doc films like those just don't play fair. And never will. |

Wouldn't most of the fantasy films of this period also count as "action films"?
The "action film" genre stands as a bit loosely defined. |

Animated films were very well represented this past decade; in fact, I'd be tempted to say it was one of their best ever, maybe the best. We got some of Pixar's most incredible work yet, some wonderful Miyazaki movies, the utterly brilliant Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit. Coraline and The Corpse Bride were fine as well.
--------------------- I'm sure I've missed some, but really, just some superb stuff! |

The zombie decade.
28 Days Later. [REC]. Dawn of the Dead. Shaun of the Dead. They took a moribund horror genre and two-point-oh'd the hell out of it. (That being said, enough already. Even zombies can suffer from overkill.)
The sword and sorcery decade.
The Lord of the Rings films represented three of the best fantasy films I've ever seen. Again, too many knock-off films have swamped the market. But, hey, it was fun while it lasted.
The decade action films finally grew up.
Casino Royale. The Bourne Identity and its offspring. Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. X-Men. Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. And those are right off the top of my head. Finally somebody realized that just because a movie is about superheros/James Bond/kung fu/whatevs doesn't mean it has to be dumbed down to the proverbial lowest common denominator.
In fact, my general view is that genre movies got smarter this decade. Not all of them, yegods, or even most of them. But quite a few of them did, and that makes my DVD player very happy. |
