My favorite underrated movie is undoubtedly MAD MAX. My brother (and others) believes THE ROAD WARRIOR and BEYOND THUNDERDOME are superior (we differ greatly on THUNDERDOME, especially when it comes to Tina Turner as a villain), but I always thought the first movie had real heart and an atmosphere that deviated greatly from the two sequels that followed. One way or another, Gibson was kicking biker ass.

I'll throw in a controversial one here:

DUNE

The David Lynch version, not the Sci-Fi miniseries. While the movie is bizarre and you need the book to understand a lot of what is going on, I find that the film captures the essence of the book. Even though the miniseries closely follows the book, it never captures the feel of the book.

The ROPe gives you three options, convert, submit, or die. There is a fourth, resist.

I'll give some props to Lynch's Dune as well. I saw the film before I read the book, and I didn't have any trouble figuring out what was going on. Don't know if there was much Dune-lore in my head from pure osmosis, though...

Still, I'm not clear on why people found it confusing; there's only five factions to keep track of.

I preferred that version by a vast margin as well, simply because it felt more like the book...

Actually, to be honest, the utterly ridiculously looking Sardaukar in the Sci-Fi miniseries is what did that version in for me.

BM: I should have mentioned this at the beginning. I solve my problems with violence.

I wasn't impressed with either Lynch's Dune or the Sci-Fi Channel's Dune. Sci-Fi's Children of Dune was a bit better, though.

In honor of the late Robert Wise, let me throw in Star Trek: The Motion Picture. For all its problems, it was MUCH better than given credit for. It was intelligent, beautiful to look at (the ships really looked BIG), thoughtful. I'll qualify this by saying I'm referring to the director's cut. But I've come to the conclusion that this may be the second-best of the Star Trek series, behind Khan. Thanks again, Mr. Wise.

THE OMEGA MAN is one of my favorite films that seems to be underated (even hated)by many people. There does seem to be the "hey -- it's stars Charlton Heston - We HAVE to hate this thing!" element in some of the criticism. Of course there are those who just plain don't care for the movie, but I get the impression that over the last twenty years or so, people who've seen it for the first time had already been conditioned to believe it was a bad movie.

Maybe not "underrated" but seemingly forgotten (which I guess gets it to the "underrated" catagory) is SLITHER. Starring James Caan, Sally Kellerman and Peter Boyle, it has a very quirky kind of humor that may take more than one viewing to warm up to.

I've got some affection for Star Trek: The Motion Picture[/i] as well. Problem is, I don't know if it's because I like the film, or because ... well, it was good to see the Enterprise[/i] on the Silver Screen.

One of my friends and I are big fans of the Trek movies, but we couldn't even sit through TMP. It's got serious Peterjacksonitis (symptoms include extended sweeping vistas accompanied by awe-inspiring music). The ending comes as a nice surprise, but it's the interminable two plus hours leading up to it that kills me. Dull. If "Khan" wasn't as good as it was, the whole series would have sunk.

I'm going to run The Man Who Knew Too Little up the flagpole and see if anyone salutes it.

I liked it better when it was called "Davidleanitis."

Star Trek: The Motion Picture was overproduced, cold, and dull, but I have to admit that over the years it looks better and better at least in comparison to the increasingly excruciating sequels (specifically V, VI, and VII, the last being Generations).

For one thing, the cast plays it straight. Too many of the sequels were bent on self-parody. Here, at least the filmmakers tried to do something more thoughtful and serious.

Secondly, the cast looks great. Remember, the show had only been cancelled in 1969, so most of the actors were still quite young. Put a different toupee on Shatner and stick him in his old lemon yellow Starfleet uniform and it would have been as if he'd just walked off the old Paramount set. Nimoy, Kelley, and others were also looking fit and thin, and even dear old Jimmy Doohan wasn't in bad shape.

And lastly, Jerry Goldsmith's score rocked.

To be honest, I think Dirk is right too.

I take it you're a Star Wars fan then.
