II, IV and VI are certainly the best original Trek movies. In II you've got one of the best villains ever, and a great score. IV is very similar to I in many respects, but it actually seems to be enjoying itself. VI has a great cast (Christopher Plummer, David Warner), and despite a little sagging in the middle (a complaint that extends to most of the cast) it's almost as good as II.
V, III and I all have their problems. For me, the series stopped being fun with the Next Generation crew took over. "First Contact" is an exception. |

I was just making a joke. :) Personally I too think some of the Trek films weren't up to snuff, but I have to disagree with you for saying "The Undiscovered Country" was excruciating. I thought it was the best out of the whole series because it carried a more intriguing tone and dealt with more theatrical issues than the last installment, but then again anything would have been more ambitious than V.

Well, I posted the message that got this group off track, let's see if I can try and get us back on....
Several years ago, I caught a movie called Second Best on HBO. I'd planned to catch the first five minutes of it then head out, but I ended up watching the whole thing. I still remember now how impressed I was by it. And its box-office take, according to IMDb? $86,115. That's eighty-six thousand. Now that's just WRONG. |

Here, I will probably get a few knocks to the head. But I only have one person to nominate: Paul W.S. Anderson. Mortal Kombat Soldier Event Horizon Resident Evil AVP Now, none of these were blockbusters. They didn't push any envelopes, there were no break out performances. But they were competently filmed, the acting in them were above average, the SFX and sets were well done, and he showed a respect to the source material that most (Uwe Boll, Cough Cough Cough) lack. I own all of these, and watched them several times at least. I've always considered him the 'salaryman' film maker - you give him a script (or the plot), a budget, and a time frame, and he delivers. I've never read about his films going over budget, or having delayed releases, and in cases like AVP and Resident Evil, he's altered his finished product to cooperate with studio heads. He mentions he disagrees with decisions but I don't see him ranting/raving about his films (Michael Bay, Boll) or immediately pointing fingers at other people.

Ah, Jacob's Ladder. This movie was our Jaws or Exorcist - you know, the first REALLY scary movie you watch when you're too young and it scares you absolutely silly and you refuse to sleep alone with the light out for like a year. Saw it on cable at my aunt's house in the middle of the night at age 11 or so, my sister's 10 and by the end of it our eyes were about as big as saucers. It was scary AND sad.

Another underrated movie I can think of is THE BIG RED ONE by Samuel Fuller. Although I think half of his resume qualifies for potential Jabootu-fodder, I have grown to respect the film for its unique perspectives on WW2 (the raid on the Belgian insane asylum and Lee Marvin's performance was spectacular). Hell, Fuller was actually there in the midst of all that danger, but I think the people who trash it have either gotten so used to more gritty, realistic war films like "Saving Private Ryan" and "Band of Brothers", or don't have the patience that others reserve when it comes to watching unconventional films (like 2001: A Space Odyssey). I hope I'm not alone in my defense of this film.

You are not, Mr. Tambourine Shatner. I'm really looking forward for the release of the restored edition in my country.
I saw it for the first time a few months ago, in a really poor quality VHS, and found it very good. Sure it has its ups and downs, butt the acting is very good, and I have to say I've never seen a war film like this one, so crazy, so realistic in a certain way, so cruel. Fuller can be proud. |

But the end ruined it. Hey, the war's over! Let's break black-out conditions! He should have been shot after lighting the match. The REAL "last battle" in WW2 took place on a Pacific island in 1946! The Japanees battalian KNEW that the war was over, they just didn't care. (In world War One, the fighting stopped hours before armistace in some areas. In other sectors, the fighting continued untill early afternoon. This was NOT because of the time zones)

I liked The Big Red one. Realistic in some ways, yet moveing in others, i could live with it. And it had had Lee Marvin...Whats not to like?

Good choice. Why is this film so unpopular? Even on genre discussion boards it seems to be quite widely disliked.
I've watched it a couple of times and enjoyed it. What am I missing? |

Probably this is what happened:
1) videogamers hated it because it changes stuff from the videogames (I think, because I never played them). Of course, they won't accept that a videogame is one thing, a movie another, so every minor change is open to endless discussion.
2) Horror fans hated it because some of the most disturbing violence / gore seems edited out, and quite poorly (remeber the end of the lift scene in the prologue?). Some more Mila Jovovich nudity would have been apreciated, too.
3) Serious critics hated it because it's based on a videogame, therefore automatically it can't be considered a good movie. Even worse, it is directed by Paul W. Anderson, so they're not going to even admit it was entertaining.
I think it is an alright film, although I would have preferred a horror approach rather than an action one. It is very entertaining and moderately effective. Not bad at all, certainly. |
