| and more bafflingly - why does everyone hate Event Horizon? It's derivative, certainly, but also one of the more effective horror films of its time. Why the widespread ill will? |

Eek! I wish I'd read all the way through this thread before I posted in the other thread on movie blunders, taking Dune down a few pegs. Hope I didn't offend anyone! I just personally think it didn't live up to its potential. Don't hate the newby!
That being said, I second all the "Jacob's Ladder" chatter, and throw out my own reference, which I'm sure will be laughed at for. Because I kind of shake my head at myself for liking this one so much.
I absolutely loved Conan the Destroyer. Not the Barbarian (which I also enjoyed, don't get me wrong), but the Destroyer. I thought the thing was a complete hoot, had a nice presentation, didn't try to be more than it was, and about the best use of Grace Jones a person could ever get on film. It was just blinkin' fun. I can't help myself.
I came, I saw, I was really too tired to deal with it so I just went to bed. |

| I may get a pasting for this, but I always thought Oscar was better than its reputation. Who'd'a thunk Stallone could be funny? It's a guilty pleasure; I was chucklin' and gigglin' throughout the movie (and a couple of good belly laughs to boot). |

FATAL INSTINCT(1993). REPOSSESSED(1990). THE SILENCE OF THE HAMS (1994). All of these films were panned by many critics. Ken Begg called REPOSSESSED "the train wreck of a 'comedy,'" but I thought REPOSSESSED and THE SILENCE OF THE HAMS were both good stupid fun, and I thought FATAL INSTINCT was funnier than TOP SECRET.

I concurr.
My brother's ex-fiance, who was a HUGE comic book fan, described CONAN THE DESTROYER as the perfect adaptation of the Roy Thomas comic-book version of Conan.
If only someone without the philosophical chip on their shoulder (or any association with a certain US Governor) would adapt an original Howard story (like, oh, THE TOWER OF THE ELEPHANT or THE DEVIL IN IRON) 'straight', then things might get interesting.
After all: Conan was not supposed to have an Austrian accent. He was supposed to have a Scottish or Irish one (though a Texas twang might not be out of place, either).

I'll add an early Clint Eastwood western, Joe Kidd. It always amazes me how everybody praises other early stuff he made like Hang 'em high, while this one remains a relatively unknown film.
C'on, people, it's made by John Sturges of The maginificent seven fame, is written by Elmore Leonard and also stars John saxon and Robert Duvall. No bells ringing yet? OK, it's a neat film, action packed, well written, well acted and with loads of that deadpan humour fans of both Eastwood and Leonard know how to appreciate. Now watch it, darn it, it's a hell better than [b]Hang 'em high[/b. |

Votes here for Ronin and Event Horizon, as well. I love Ronin. It sparked my still-raging love affair with mean-looking Audi performance sedans. I always felt Event Horizon was very unjustly hated upon - derivative, perhaps, but the end result was pretty darned creepy, IMHO.
