Despite the mess my house is in and not being able to live there anymore due to the dangerous black mold now growing on the ceiling where rainwater came in through the holes in the roof, at least my home is still there as well as my most valued possessions, which is something I cannot say about many of my co-workers. Just at the TV station alone there are 15 employees that lost their homes and all their possessions to Katrina. Hollywood disaster movies have nothing on the real thing. Virtually every building on the Gulf Coast has some sort of damage. Darn near every roof has a blue tarp on it covering roof damage of varying degrees. They say Katrina spawned over 200 tornadoes and caused a 40-foot storm surge. Just try comprehending that for a moment. 200 tornadoes just on the Gulf Coast alone and a 40-foot storm surge, which is basically the equivilent of saying a continuous 2-story tsunami that lasted for about six hours. They're still pulling bodies out of attics of people that drowned. Just think about that for a moment. Drowning in your attic!
Still have a friend I haven't heard from that lived in one of the towns that no longer exists; last I heard from him was an email the Saturday before the storm talking about "battening down the hatches" for Katrina. If they didn't get the hell out of there on Sunday before the storm then he and the people he was staying with are all likely dead.
Right now I'm forced to share a cramped apartment with my mom, which is still better than the couch on which I spent several nights at my sister's roach infested hellhole. One of this biggest problems with temporary housing here on the coast is that all the decent hotels/motels/apartments have been confiscated by insurance and repair people, further stranding those of us that are legitimately displaced. It's a mess down here and will be for a long time.
Fortunately, the water is now drinkable again, electricity and cable has been restored just about everywhere it can be, and just tonight they lifted the 11 pm - 6 am curfew. Hopefully life can slowly begin returning to some sort of normalcy, although as one astute radio host down here put it, "normal is now just a setting on your dryer." Thank goodness I had no life to begin with otherwise I'd be going stir crazy from having so little to do down here. Nonetheless, I'm starting to get back into the swing of things. Thank goodness I had the foresight to purchase a new laptop that arrived just two weeks before the storm as my other computer was sitting right under a section of the ceiling that leaked. I was able to salvage my data from it but just the noises it makes when running indicates it isn't long for this world.
So in the interest of trying to get back to normal I can't think of any better way to do so then by ripping apart a lousy Sci-Fi Channel flick, one that just coincidentally happens to be about a (supposedly) apocalyptic storm cloud. I also have some new stuff over at the blog and will be adding a few more items over the weekend. Just follow the links in the signature for my latest musings.

Oh, and I'm kicking myself for not having a camera with me the other day when I found myself in traffic behind a Toyota with a big yellow sign on the back that read: CHURCH OF SCIENTOLOGY: DISASTER RELIEF TEAM. I don't think they've been out in force like this since the weekend BATTLEFIELD EARTH opened. :)

Hey man - kudos to your ability to survive within this horror. I live in Olive Branch, MS - if you can make it up here - do so. Email me at my profile's email (or ask Ken for my business email). I have a pretty decent house that I can put you up in (for the duration). I can get you a job, too (I'm a Production Supervisor for a large company). Let me know...

Holy smoke! Pretty much anything I could say would sound corny and in no way up to the disaster. But it's awesome that, from your post, the storm hasn't dampened your attitude, and that you yourself are good and healthy. Welcome back!!

Thanks for the offer, hbrennan, but my situation isn't that bad. Thank goodness. Should be moving into an apartment within the next month while the house get worked on. Looking forward to it because then I can get a phone line put in and have regular internet access again instead of having to rely on it at work.

Glad to hear it. Just remember - we're always there for you. By the way, my daughter really enjoys the wordfind puzzles on your site. She says "Hi".

Foywonder, it's good to have you back, and to know you're OK.
I guess this will be a new selling feature for laptops - "In case of emergency, you can just tuck it under your arm and RUN!". |
