Finally, the internet can serve humanity in a deeply meaningful way: http://www.popvssoda.com/

Put in my two cents: "Soda" -- Oddly enough, most people I know here in Chicago seem to call it "Pop" perhaps it's because I from the time I was six months old (I was born in Chicago) till I was three, I lived in California.

I was born in the Soda Belt (southern California) and now live in the Coke belt (south-eastern Tennessee.)
I think I tend to say "soft drink," actually.

I thinm it's more of a "pop" belt since the northeast and southwest are both "soda" areas with "pop" being prevalent in middle America.
I'm not so sure about the whole "Coke" thing, though. My wife's family is from Georgia and they only say "coke", but they don't mean it as a generic term for carbonated soft drink, they just believe that anything made by Pepsi is somehow related to satanism.

| From the Maritimes of Canada, it's clear that "soda" is some sort of corrupt Americanism. The stuff is "pop". That's not up for negotiation, NAFTA or no. |

Quite amusing. You may find interesting that if you lived in the "colonised" Europe, you would call all brands of cola Coca-Cola. However, all our inventive was gone after that effort, so we don't have a generic name for the rest of flavours.
And now, the question I must ask: In which parts of the USA, if I ever bother visiting them, could I end up in tar and feathes if I ask for a "pop"? |

Here in Northern Alabama, it's Coke, Co-Cola, or a "drank."
She was bred in old Kentucky, but she's just a crumb up here. |

Here in Eastern PA, it's "soda"; in Western PA, it's "pop" (pronounced "paup"). Some people just use "Coke" as a generic term.
Now me, I don't drink either. I prefer a tall glass of "wuter". |

That's probably the one I most commonly use now seeing as how I don't drink anything with caffeine in it like Coke or Pepsi, that or the neutral 'drink'. Before I quit though, I always used Coke.

Two things:
- That's understandable, simply because Georgia is Coca Cola and vice versa. Can you imagine drinking a Rum and Pepsi for instance?
- It's nigh impossible to explain Sierra Mist without involving Satan on some level or other

My maternal grandmother was from the same area, but she used 'dope' instead with an occasional 'drank' for good measure.

I actually started to use the word Pop when I heard Kevin Costner use it in the movie A Perfect World. In that he played a Texas convict hunted by Clint Eastwood.

I've alway considered Sprite Remix to be the Scientology of soft drinks. When people start drinking it, they run out and try to get more converts to start drinking. And if you say anthing bad about it; watch you back! |

| Here in Washington it's a triple-shot, double-fizz tall cola latte, hold the coffee and milk. |

Here in N.C. it's soda with coke a close second. And I always make a point of saying Coca-Cola when I order one a personal quirk, I can't explain it. And pepsi is for those who wonder "hey I really like Mrs. Butterworths I wonder what would happen if it was slighty carbonated and came in a can!"
