As a piece of related trivia, one of the best issues of the Planetary comic series (where the world is secretly ruled by a much nastier version of the Fanastic Four) we get to see flashbacks of that universe's verion of Superman, Wonder Woman and the Green Lantern and their origins. We also get to see their brutal slaughter at the hands of the Four.
Superman doesn't even get to leave his space pod - he's fried right after his door opens. This turns out to be a bit of miscommunication - the head of the Four wanted the proxy Supes brought back alive!
Wonder Woman is killed by a sniper shot as soon as she leaves the island as a message to the Amazons to stay out of the Four's world.
Green Lantern is shot out of orbit and has his powersource extracted for sale to the highest bidder.
It's a bleak issue, but one that tells you just how powerful and ruthless the Four are (and by this stage, we have only barely seen the Four, so it's a great set-up for them as bad guys).

I have to go into "geek mode" because Ken had asked why Green Lantern Abin Sur was useing a rocket ship. This was apparently asked by fans soon after GL appiered, because it was answered in the Sixties:
Hal Jordon's pal Tom (Eskamo name I can't remember) asked this same question and GL asked the ring, since it can answer questions about it's origin and others who had worn it. Abin had imprisoned some energy beings, but one had been over-looked and later forced him to go free his buddys. Abin pointed out the great distance they would have to travel and convinced the EB to let him use a SPACESHIP so that his ring would be fully charged when they arive. (This was a lie as the rings have a full charge for the entire 24 hours) He brought the lantern (Which was kept invisable when not in use) along because, I don't know. He recharged the ring in flight, so I guess it was to boost his morale. He then attacked the EB and the rocket flew through a yellow radiation field, causeing the it to crash. The rest is in the cartoon.

| Did that issue of Planetary have just those three heroes' origins, or were there more? If it was just those three, I wonder if it was an explicit homage to this episode? |

quote: Quoth Ken, What if in the present day Luthor arranged to meet with Superman, and offered to have the entire Legion of Doom return to the past and devote its considerable scientific genius to finding a way to stabilize Krypton. Kal-El’s homeworld would be saved. However, he would then never have become Earth’s greatest champion, and presumably the Legion might well, eventually, manage to take over our world.
Wouldn’t that be worth it? The survival of an entire civilized planet, his birthplace, versus the possible subjugation of his adopted homeworld? After all, in his absence might not some other equally powerful champion arise? (Another scenario ignored in this episode.) And even if Superman decided to allow history to run its anointed course, can you imagine the crushing guilt that would result from that decision? Frankly, if only to torment Superman, you’d think Luthor would enjoy that scheme immensely.
You know, there's some alternate reality where you're a fanfic writer. And this wouldn't make a half bad story. Untill, inevitably, like all fanfiction, it becomes slash with Superman and Bizarro and Scarecrow having a threesome. And in that alternate universe, I'm there to MST it.

Just these three (from memory) but other issues have things like Thor's hammer and a "trophy cabinet" of other recognisable superhero weapons. I think these comic book characters are the three that best represent DC, but I did see the link between that issue and this episode when I was reading Ken's recap.
Planetary is, in many ways, a meta-comic book series in that it really ties together a lot of established comic / pop culture and provides an interesting way of looking at it. If this sounds interesting to you, I'd recommend that people pick up the trade paperbacks (it's by Warren Ellis) since the actual comics themselves come out very irregularly.

Um, Bruce, you have THE FLASH with you! He's standing right there!
Well, written in the mid-seventies, the primary secondary storage system in use at the time was tape ... I'd say the limit is computer I/O, not how fast the Flash can push buttons.
