Anyone see that special on Bravo? It was pretty good. What are your top 5 scarriest movie moments? Mine are...
1. Poltergeist- when the tree crashes thru the window and grabs Robbie and tries to eat him
2. Raiders of the lost Ark- the scene when Bellok opens the Ark and the ensuing massacre (especially the melting faces)
3. The Thing- When the creature is in the dog kenell.
4. Deep Blue sea- Samuel L Jacksons last scene.
5.American Wherewolf in London- The dream sequence with the Nazis
I realize most of the movies are old-but its been awhile sice i've been scared. |

In no real order, and kind of off the top of my head :
1) The ‘hallway scene’ in *Exorcist 3* (you know … /that/ one). Yes, it is in a way a spring-loaded-cat moment, but it still makes me jump, even knowing its coming
2) The chestburster scene from *Alien*. 'nuff said.
3) Regan being hypnotized in the original *Exorcist*. There was something quite disturbing about how placid everything was at the start.
4) The cat attack from *Legend of Hell House*. Being a cat owner myself I know I’m only one missed feeding away from a fate similar to Ms. Tanner.
5) The opening segment from *Hellraiser*. I could have done without the more graphic bits, though. Something about the dark room with the clink of hanging chains really set the Bad Place in my imagination going. Of course the bulk of the movie did very little for me, but the imagery of the opening was pretty intense.
And for a bonus :
6) The entire film *Underworld*. I love Kate Beckinsale as an actress, and seeing the kinds of films she’s chosen to make lately has me convinced I’ll never see her do Shakespeare again. The idea that she’ll be in nothing but the likes of *Underworld* or *Van Helsing* terrifies me to my core.
~D ( Mind you, no complaints about her /wardrobe/ from *Underworld* …)

Here's a few I can think of...
1) The Shining; when Jack Torrance embraces the naked lady, then backs off to see her as a crone.
2) Dark Waters (Orginal version); actually contains two great scares at the end. One is a shocker, the other a chiller, and neither will help you sleep that night.
3) Marathon Man; Olivier as the dentist from hell.
4) Witchfinder General; the opening sequence: all too realistic and genuinely unsettling.
5) The Vanishing (Original version); the ending with the hero waking up in the coffin.

1) Jaws, when Brody is griping about tossing chum into the water and...
2) House of the Dead, when I realized Juergen Protchnow was reduced to working in this film.
3) Aliens, when Ripley and Newt made it back out of the station ... and their ride is missing.
4) The Birds, as the gasoline slowly flows towards the fire.
5) 2001. "I'm afraid I can't do that, Dave."
6) Miami Vice is running up to $200 million dollars.
7) The makers of Catwoman used badly-edited pictures of Anubis in the opening of Catwoman instead of authentic pictures of the 10+ feline-headed Egyptian gods or goddesses.
---------- We've always been united in stupidity. That's why there is no hope. But, then again, when has that ever stopped us?

In no particular order....
1) Brett's search for Jones in Alien (you know he's gonna die, but you're still on the edge of the seat)
2) Lila turning Mrs. Bates around in the original Psycho
3) Eleanor realizing that wasn't Theo holding her hand in The Haunting (the original again)
4) Mike standing in the corner in The Blair Witch Project
5) the last twenty minutes of Open Water
No way I can limit it to five....
6) Grady telling Jack about how he "cor-r-r-r-rected" his wife and daughters in The Shining
7) Tangina telling the Frelings where their daughter is... then telling them "Now, get ahold of yourselves..." in Poltergeist
8) the ringing phone during the closing credits of Black Christmas
9) Lecter reaching out and touching Clarice's finger in Silence of the Lambs
10) Father Merrin and Father Karras going in for the showdown with the possessed Regan in The Exorcist |

Yes, I saw that. Good show. My brain is fried from NaNoWriMo, but I can think of one: "House on Haunted Hill" (Vincent Price). When she turned around in the basement and saw the blind housekeeper - who then just floated on by.

1) The hand popping out of the grave in CARRIE. 2) Alan Arkin terrorizing Audrey Hepburn at the end of WAIT UNTIL DARK. 3) The "telescreen behind the picture" in 1984. I havn't seen the film, but I've read the book. |

I just got home. On my way from work, it hit me. One of the scariest moments in a movie from my childhood: "She Demons" (that's right "She Demons"). When the wife of the head Nazi said something to the effect "You'd go back, too, if you had a face like this..." At this point she pulls the bandages from her eyes to reveal a burnt skull visage. (yes, I know she had eyelids previously, while bandaged - but that's not the point). Scared the crap out of me when I was 10.

A lot of good ones already mentioned but some others-
The Ring- The appearance of Samara at the end.
Halloween- The mask of Michael Myers slowly emerging out of the darkness behind Jamie Lee Curtis
Pet Sematary- The bit with the resurrected Gage was creepy for sure but the bit that got to me was the dreams the mother had of her sick sister (Zelda?).
The Lady in Black. Not a particularly well known film but there is one scene in this British made for TV ghost flick, involving the rather sudden appearance of the titular character that made me jump like no other scene in a movie has (Okay I was rather young when watching it but it was an effective scene).

In no particular order:
The end of THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT. It is fashionable to bash the movie, but I still find it quite creepy and effective, especially when looked as as, essentially, a modern adaptation of an HP Lovecraft story.
The scene in FELLOWSHIP OF THE RINGS when Bilbo is giving Frodo his old armor & Sting the shortsword. When Bilbo reaches briefly for The One Ring and they CGI his face to look like Gollum for a split second, I was squirming in my seat for the next 15 minutes. That was when I realized that Peter Jackson had finally managed to make a movie where CGI effects were not just eye candy, but integral to the plot.
The first time I saw FORBIDDEN PLANET (on the CBS LATE SHOW back in the 70's), the Beebe Barron electronic tonalities cut right through me, and still send shivers up my spine.
The recent theatrical re-release of the EXCORCIST had a brief subliminal flash of Father Damien's 'posessed' face in a shadow early in the movie. Completely freaked me out.
In the vein of a 'negative' fright: seeing Keanu Reeves try to be a menacing serial killer in THE WATCHER. Uh uh, not happening.

I'll try to keep mine spoiler free, because these are all doozies:
Black Sabbath (1963)
Virtually the entire "Drop of Water" sequence. If you guys haven't seen this movie yet, RENT IT.
The Haunting (1963)
Knock KNOCK.
Island of Terror (1966)
Too many freaky scenes to mention; just the sound of those creepy crawlies was enough to give me the willies.
Night of the Living Dead (1968)
The little girl.
Let's Scare Jessica to Death (1971)
The lake sequence.
Jaws
Ben Gardner's boat.
Suspiria (1977)
The ending: bedroom sequence. Mwa-ha-ha. You've been warned.
Alien (1979)
Air ducts.
The Thing (1982)
Blood test.
Ringu (1998)
Sadako emerges. Better than the Samara sequence in the Ring remake. Sadako even walks scarier than Samara.
The Others (2001)
Too many goose-pimply moments to mention, though the gravesite sequence is a prime example of how to evoke terror through pure minimalism and without cheap tricks. (See Kick-Ass Horror Thread for further discussion.) |

In the same vein, The Devil's Advocate which up until halfway through was being played more as a psychological thriller, then suddenly the CGI face effect flipped me out just because it was so out of the blue (not to mention a mildly erotic lead-in just to throw you even more off-guard).
And a second on the naked woman transformation in The Shining but for some reason my memory says she didn't turn into a crone but into a severe burn victim.
I also had more than a few nightmares about the broken knife under the skin scene in Planet of Death, but that was probably more gross than frightening (the disembodied hand scene that immediately followed didn't disturb me half as much).

From memory, Sadako's walk appears just so wrong because it was played backwards and the actor used their Kabuki dance training to add in some twitches. All in all, it just screamed out "this looks wrong" to me and freaked me out too.

1) When Huckle Cat went to Busytown and learned to say "Please" and "Thank You"
2) When Bananas Gorilla saw a dump truck and...
ELOrocks17: I meant scariest moments!
Oops. Sorry.
1a) Tie: Jacob's Ladder: On the dance floor; his wife dancing with the demon thing. When that thing came out of her mouth, I really almost fainted.
1b) Tie: Jacob's Ladder: "Take him to X-ray" and that needle. Aurgh. That sent Maddy and I right out of the TV room.
2) Requiem for a Dream: Last twenty minutes. I forgot to breathe. Not scary but sooooooo disturbing.
3) Dead Ringers: So absolutely unwatchable (in the disturbing/frightening way) in places that description here is beyond me.
4) Frailty: When he convinces the kids to hack at the "demons" with axes. Takes on heightened meaning here in Texas.
5) Blair Witch: Several moments in the last 30 minutes, certainly the house. I was born close to Burkittsville, just south of Charles Town off the Cabletown road.
Pip Buy the book. You won't be (too) sorry. http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/11/11457.phtml |

<looking at Pip, shaking my head>
Eva, Eva, Eva, what are we gonna do with you?
Here's one I can't believe no one (including myself) has mentioned: the first five minutes of Jaws. One of the scariest. Damn. Things. Ever. |
