Salem's Lot (1979)--the "Look at me, teacher" scene. *shudder*
The Exorcist--the crucifix scene
Halloween--the "dead" Michael Myers sitting back up
Poltergeist--attack of the clown doll
The Ring--finding the girl in the closet
Being real is good. Being interesting is better. |

I will disqualify myself from the "main event" since I have hardly seen any horror movies.
But I will give a sample of a scary moment in a non-horror movie: the scene in Kurosawa's "Throne of Blood" where Lady Washizu is pouring tea. The woman is just not human.

Here's one straight outta left field....
The microship from Koyaanisqatsi is still one of the most chilling shots I have ever seen. Keep in mind, this is from a guy whose politics are polar opposites from the people who made that movie. |

Moving right along -
The clown-under-the-bed scene in Poltergeist scared me so badly that to this day I still won't sleep with any extremities hanging over the edge of the bed & think that all clowns are made of pure evil, waiting for the opportunity to devour one's soul.
The tiki doll story from Trilogy of Terror did wonders for my childhood, as well.
The Ring was just one long scary moment. Gave me nightmares for a couple weeks.
The scene in Signs where Mel Gibson looks under the pantry door & the alien pokes its hand out. Yes, I know it was a cheap jumper scene, & normally I can see them coming a mile away, but somehow it caught me off guard. This further served to reinforce my rule about not sleeping with my hands or feet over the edge of the bed. Even freakier is the scene where they show the video from South America of the alien coming out of the shrubs. I can't explain why that shot still gives me the willies.
Funny anecdote (well, funny to me): After watching Signs, I was at my then-girlfriend's house by myself. The city that she lived in had been having problems with the power going out in some parts of town. As I was watching TV, the power died. My imagination kicked into overdrive & I was sure, sure, SURE that the aliens were invading. I grabbed a flashlight & sat out in my truck until the power came back on.
Stupid imagination...

There've been a lot, like the scene in Jaws where Hooper is poking around the hole in the hull of the abandoned boat, and the scene in Alien where Dallas points his flashlight the wrong way.
One scene that actually had me out of my chair and across the room was the autopsy scene in Lifeforce. In retrospect I should have known that was coming, and I can't imagine why I didn't foresee it. But I didn't.
Some movies are just frightening from start to finish. Quatermass and the Pit and The Haunting (the 1960's version) for example. |

For a jump scene, ELO, I prefer the moment when Howell's character realized that wasn't a french fry he was holding. |

Ring: When Samara comes out of the TV at the end
House on Haunted Hill(remake): When the girl with the camera trails it over the empty room and catches a ghostly surgery in progress
The Grudge (remake): When she's watching the security cameras, everything smears out of focus, and then the Grudge comes up out of the shadows and shambles towards the camera
They: Most of the scenes. Now, I love the movie as a good Lovecraftian style movie, but it gets me extra because I'm close to legally blind, and the dark has always creeped the hell out of me. The movie triggered every childhood freak out I ever had while watching it. I recommend it if you haven't seen it.
Blair Witch: the last few seconds. Seeing the 2nd guy facing into the corner, and then everything just stops. I immediately thought about the quick comments about the killer who made the other kid stare into the corner while he did his business with the other, and got chills.
Deathwatch: ....argh. mind went blank! but I loved this movie enough to track down a copy
Event Horizon: when Weir goes into the bowels and the lights start strobing out, and then his wife shows up. Also, when he flashes back to when she died.
Lost Souls: the last scene. Won't say anything else. If you've seen it, you know, if you haven't I gotta keep my mouth shut.
And to me, just as scary but not a horror movie: Scary Movie - when the transsexual coaches 'stuff' flops out of his/her pants. I actually yanked the movie out of my VCR and threw it at my brother for suggesting I watch it. Oddly, a series that improved with each sequel.

I never thought about that one, Jay, which is surprising; I was a Richard Scarry addict as a kid. |

There is a scene in Pumpkinhead that always give me the willies. The camera follows one of the characters from one room into the kitchen. As she passes a window, Pumpkinhead walks past the window at the same time. It's very subtle, the camera stays on the actress and doesn't linger on the monster. You can miss it if you blink. It's just one of the touches that make it one of my favorite films.

This movie does not really fit into the horror genre, but it is so repulsively creepy that I get cold chills watching it. That movie is Deliverance. While this movie generates many low-grade jokes, to me it is bone-chilling and darkly disturbing. One can ridicule the hillybilly inbreds, but I find them as sinister and repellant as any monster in a quality horror film.
What is really frightening is you can find the same characters on Saturday at Wal-Mart ‘round these parts. {{shiver}}

| Jurassic Park: A Tyrannasaurus Rex is trying to eat you. It's mouth is open and right in front of you. You feel its' breath as nothing seperates you from the hungry mouth exept a thin peice of glass that just broke off the top of your car! |

Jumanji(sp?) scared me when I was younger. Mainly the scene at the beginning where the boy gets sucked into the game. That scene scared me so bad that when they played it at my school(as a reward for good behavior) I had to beg the teacher to let me leave the room before the scene came on.(I lied and said I needed to use the restroom)I hid in the hallway until I could hear that the scene was over. Haven't seen the movie in awhile, so I don't know if it would still have the same affect or not. I had no problem with the rest of the movie, just that one scene.
