Thunder Bay (1953) The Ghost and the Darkness (1996) The North Star (1943)

The above three movies are examples of films in which makers missed a major change in what the public would consider appropriate. That is, a movie that completely misjudged the politics or ideals of the vast majority (as opposed to a movie that was purposefully designed to piss off the vast majority).
Would anybody like to submit other examples?

"The Edge", with Anthony Hopkins and OOT Baldwin. Hopkins plays a *very* successful businessman, and it's his smarts that saves his and Baldwin's lives when they are lost in the wilderness (and Baldwin's stupidity that gets himself killed). Hopkins' businessman is a complex and sympathetic character.
They missed the memo that businessmen can only be stupid, shallow, evil, and greedy. |

Hey, good one. Maby i should catch this one.
The Ghost and the Darkness was not too bad. I have Professional dangerious game hunter and guide, the late Peter Hathaway Capstick's book, "Death in the silent places". Its about the great names in African hunting and adventuring...oh, those guys not only never got the memo, they would have used it to light their campfires! The first part of the book is the story of the Tsavo maneaters, that G and the D was about...Man! No wonder people in India and Africa get cheesed when rich white euros and yanks try and tell them how to deal with animals. Dengerious animals. And as Capstick notes...of the top five killers of hunters, three of them...the Elephant, Cape Buffalo and Rhino...are herbavors!

Flange,
I love Peter Capstick's books! Check out "Death in the Long Grasses" which is about his own personal hunting adventures.
I like Ghost and the Darkness too because I have a degree in African History, but I can see why not many people would be into it, there's not much of a market for African adventure movies these days. One thing that kind of bothers me about the movie though is Michael Douglas's character who was completely made up so they could have a "Quint" style obsessive hunter. |

The author of the screenplay of that movie, William Goldman, explains a bit about what happened with this character in his book WHAT LIE DID I TELL? Apparently he had originally designed the character to be a minor role - Great white Hunter shows up, gets killed, leaves hero in even more dire fix - but then one of the film's executive producers (read: moneybags) fell in love with the character and insisted that he be 'fleshed out' and given a backstory. Now, Goldman always believes in keeping TPTB on a film happy, which in this case meant re-doing the entire script to turn this originally minor character into a major co-starring role. WG is the first to admit that this really threw the entire movie out of whack, the question is, why didn't he speak up and fight for his original (obviously better) screenplay? |

| One movie I would add to the list is BUFFALO 66, an anti-war black comedy in the tradition of CATCH-22 which opened in October... of 2001. Whoopsie! |

Just a completely OT note on The Ghost and the Darkness - how many people know that you can see the original lions (stuffed, of course) in Chicago's Field Museum?
Fascinating, really. |

RAMBO III
Both were released in 1988, but by '88 we were almost friendly with the Russians (RED HEAT was also released that year, and while not that good a movie, it did at least portray them as something more than sneering sadists).
What a difference 3 years can make.

Yeah they actually mention that at the end of the movie. The real lions were unusually large, but had no manes, even though they males. |

Actually, in the Field, they apologize that the lions LOOK small - apparently, they spent some time as floor rugs before being stuffed!
And that's right, they don't have manes.
The Field sells an excellent little booklet originally written by the man who shot them; seems like it would have made a great movie just as the story stood originally. |

CobraCmdr. : Read both books, from Books On Tape. Great readings. Seen Capstick on some library video's as well. On a Cape Buff hunt! Hairy hunting, those bruisers.
Asta : Capstick said he left the Hippo off his list, as they were basicly water animals, and he decided the purely land animals were more dangerious as they were more frequantly encountered.

While You Were Sleeping.
A modern day romantic comedy in which the two leads never, ahem, "do it". |

Also a movie dedicated to, if I recall correctly, "The heroic freedom fighters of Afghanistan."
What a difference 13 years can make.

That article is pretty stupid, by the way. There's an interesting premise, but it makes no coherent point and is just an excuse for the author to rant about random flicks. It's not even clear if he's defending the "missed the memo" flicks or mocking them, or whether "the memo" is supposedly coming from the audience or the EEEEEEEEEEEVIL Hollywood groupthink executives.
I haven't seen "The Ghost and the Darkness", but the reviews seemed to indicate it was pretty lousy. Ya think THAT might be the reason it bombed?
