Wasn't there a movie released in, like, 1968, that
featured a main character who was a construction
worker who heroically stood up for America by
beating some hippie war protestors with a sledge
hammer?

Inspired by this thread I went out and rented "The Ghost and the Darkness". It's OK. Actually, the first half was quite good, but it gets sillier and sillier in a 90s action-movie kind of way. Then Val Kilmer is attacked by an owl, and all credibility is lost.

I really don't think the hunting aspect hurt it with audiences. If anything, I think that after seeing ravening alien xenomorphs in every other movie, a pair of lions are hardly the mind-boggling threat the movie wants us to see them as.

That one was a big hit at the box office so I don't think it qualifies.
