OK, I just watched this movie. WTF?
1) The effects weren't too bad. Although a Gila Monster isn't really that dangerous, even one as large as a bus, since they move at the speed of snail.
2) How did it get the people out of the cars?
3) Hmmm...pituitary gland overdrive - do I smell rubber science?
4) Yeah, they really want to tell us the star can sing. He doesn't sing badly - but Elvis good? Uh-uh.
Goofy, but fun. I'm sure Ken HPoJ has seen it, and can give me more information. Perhaps he'll even write a review. (Pleasepleaseplease).

I believe that Our Host has seen the TV special that one of the cable networks did on the "science" of The Giant Gila Monster and The Killer Shrews, as have I. If I recall correctly, the "giant" lizard used in The Giant Gila Monster wasn't even a gila monster.
As far as the singing goes, The Giant Gila Monster features what may be the worst songs I've ever heard in any movie.
Reality is a crutch for people who can't face up to science fiction. |

Giant Gila Monster is a film I saw a billion times as a kid. It was made by the same guys who made The Killer Shrews, and they played in drive-ins as a double bill. Imagine a time when you could jump in your car and see glorious stuff like that on a big screen. It really makes me weep. (Especially since I saw Bloodrayne last night. This is progress?)
GGM (and KS) are in the public domain now, and available on about a zillion PD DVDs. However, there is an Image disc that probably looks OK; I'll have to check to see if it's on my collection.
If nothing else, I'll put it on the sponsor's list and see if anyone bites.
By the way, that special on the science behind KS and GGM played on The Animal Channel, and was terrific. Chris Holland burned me a copy, but they do replay it every once in a while (especially) around Halloween, so keep an eye out for it. It's definately worth the effort.
PEGGY: I don't see how having a girl on the team would ruin it. Did a woman judge ruin the Supreme Court? HANK: Yes, and that woman's name was Earl Warren.

I will always have a soft spot in my heart for GHM, or at least the MST3K episode featuring it. On the morning of my wedding, while waiting until it was time to head over to the place where we were having the ceremony, I spent a couple hours watching MST3K:GHM. Was it funnier because of the impending marriage? I dunno, but I laughed a lot - a lot more than at my bachelor party, that's for sure. Plus you have to love a movie that features the "Leg Up" position so much.
