Just learned that they're remaking Westworld, with the director of The Cell at the helm.
I'm gonna see lotsa good movies this year, because I got Netflix! |

I remember seeing the original for the first time on tv late one night when I was about 11, and Yul Brynner scared the crap out of me.
Whoever is cast in his role had better be good at non-verbal communication.

Well, you could say that George Lucas has been trying to do that with his "new editions".... |

| The director of The Cell, you say? So, does that mean that there will be extensive trippy eye-candy sequences that end up being completely irrelevant to the resolution of the plot? |

I don't think Westworld is really all that legendary a movie that it would be a sin to remake. Most people from my generation have probably never even heard of it (I'm 25) much less teenagers. It might have a cult following but that's about it.

Cobra, you got a point. The original had plenty of plot holes in it, and it would be interesting to see how -- if -- they got plugged up. But there's already been a remake of Westworld. It was called Jurassic Park. And I don't know how they're gonna find a Gunslinger anywhere NEAR as good as Yul Brynner was!
And Max, I have a bad feeling that's EXACTLY what's gonna happen with Tarsem Singh directing. |

Yeah, Westworld actually strikes me as a pretty good choice to remake. My theory is that remakes work best when the original has one or both of these characteristics:
1. Memorable, but *not* a Great Movie or a true classic. Frequently, good targets will have a great idea, but for one reason or other, the execution wasn't quite there (maybe a key role was miscast, the script didn't realize the potential of the story concept, etc.)
2. The "spectacle" value of the original could be significantly enhanced by the possibilities of new special effects and/or a bigger budget.
Sometimes (but usually not), the second factor might be strong enough to overcome the first (I'd argue Peter Jackson's King Kong works on that level.)
Westworld looks theoretically good to me on both counts: it's a good movie, but not all *that* good, and maybe you could do more with the technology now.
Not sure I'm all that enthusiastic about what the guy from The Cell will do with it, though. |

Hummm...okey, but who to cast? And how will they write the story, as we most all know the script? What could they do, that would catch the flavor of the original idea, and yet surprise us? And will there be Cylons?

Westworld did have it's share of truely dumb concepts. Such as the guns that had real bullets in them but had built in sensors to keep them from firing at real people. No. Really.
Westworld also had one of the earliest uses of CGI with that pixelated shot of Brenner looking at a torch. So, yeah, the effects lacked something.
Personally, I thought some of the plot holes were particularly big. So big that I would hate to have to fix them.
Somehow, I get the feeling that this remake will be kind of like that script for the Spider-Man movie that was rumored to be circulating in the early 90's where Spider-Man was not a costumed super hero but a mutated half-man, half-spider monster. No. Really.
With the director of The Cell on board, I suspect they'll be eschewing robots for jacking into a Matrix-like computer world. What do you think of that idea? |

Hmph. I didn't have a problem with that part. I've fired guns both with bullets and blanks and you can feel the difference (in fact, during a race someone had dropped a real shell in the starting gun box and I got a chance to feel the difference without even expecting it, a true double-blind test).
Of course, that doesn't explain why the robots had bullets.

Ouch. Personally I've reached the point where the "hurt in the 'matrix' means hurt in real life" cliche is so annoying, I want a good reason for it before I'll even start to suspend my disbelief.

| A Westworld remake will have a couple of problems going in. First will be the Soylent Green Effect: even those who haven't seen the original know EXACTLY what the ending twist is. Second, who in the hell could top Yul Brynner as the Gunslinger? (And if I hear they're not gonna have a Gunslinger, I'll be calling for Tarsem Singh to die a slow, horrible death.) |

That would work, Jack. in fact, I read a fan-fic where the guests were put into some kind of sleep and their brains directed ROBOTS in the town, alowing them to get KILLED too!
