I recently saw him play a Romulan on Star Trek DS9. I also saw Iggy Pop play a Vorta, I have to say he looked much better as a ligh blue skinned alien than he does as a human being.

When did Lance Henriksen ever play a Romulan on DS9? If you refer to In the Pale Moonlight, that wasn't him.
You know Grand Funk, don't you? The wild, shirtless lyrics of Mark Farner? The bong-rattling bass of Mel Schacher? The ... adequate drumwork of Don Brewer? |

Oops, my bad. It seemed like him but then again the actor had on a lot of makeup.

Lance Henriksen's birthday should be an important date on the Jabootu calendar. Few actors have been in so many bad movies without embarrasing themselves far more often than he does.
I don't have any of his movies available, but recently watched Mimic 3, and I can confirm Mr. Henriksen is still loyal to the cause. |

In honour of this momentous date, I will go out and buy "Millenium" series 2. Watched series 1 not too long ago and was amazed by exactly how much it urinated on all the "CSI"-aren't-we-dark crime dramas that exist today.

Still, I'm not sure I agree with Ken's sentiments about the crap churned out in th 30's and 40's. Yeah, they have a certain charm about them - but how much of that charm is derived from the 60-year perspective. Perhaps in forty years people will look with nostalgia at Friday the 13th part VI and say "Why don't the do movies like this today?"

I'm surprised they don't say that today, considering how lame was the "big comeback" of the slasher genre in the 90s... At least in the 00s we're having some decent stuff, now that the days of Scream and I know what you did last summer are over.
Unless they plan to turn them into animated TV series a-la-Scooby-Doo, that is. Can you imagine how lame the results would be? |

I doubt -- and I sincerely hope -- that no one will ever yearn for the good old days of Friday the 13th flicks. The thing about some of those bad '30s and '40s movies was that they were innocent. The Hays Office did have one benefit: it forced filmmakers to get creative when trying to get across an "inappropriate" scene or idea (I recently saw a cartoon from the 1940's where one cat yelled to the other, "Gimme the bird! Gimme the bird!" The other cat looked at the camera and said, "If it wasn't for the Hays Office, I WOULD give him the bird.")
Nowadays, it's anything goes. Gonna take the clothes off and get in some quick doing the nasty? No prob! Wanna show blood and guts! Chop away! Wanna have enough f-words to fill the room? Do it to your bleeping heart's content.
And that's why I'm hoping no one ever reminisces about the bad slasher movies of the last twenty-odd years. |

Actually it's because they are getting remade so quickly we don't even have time to miss them. :-)

But there are other conventions to fill the gap. All the PC codes, for example.

Actually, IMHO those darn 90's slashers were very short on sex / nudity or even violence. The Hayes office may be gone for good, but there's the MPAA (which seems more restrictive every day) and the suits that will try to turn ANY movie (even an slasher) into PG just to sell more tickets.
I'm not against movies making money, of course, but there are some genres that just can't be PG-ised without losing their reason of existence. I mean, for instance, why making a Basic Instinct sequel without the sex? Erotica and horror are about transgression, you take them that away and you end up with things like the I know what you did last summer series.
And now, before the topic derails completely, we should go back to Lance Henriksen. |
