Hi guys,
I picked up the Rambo trilogy on DVD relatively cheapy the other day. I had never seen them before. I just finished the second one and I just have to say that John Rambo has the noisiest arrows in the whole wide world. Seriously. They are almost as noisy as a gunshot, particularly that Asian chick's little uzi-like thing with the silencer on it still going bangbangbangbangbang! INcredible, man. But his arrows go like WHOOOOOOShshshshooOOM! A Maze Zing! |

Yet another weapon blunder from Hollywood. In one movie I saw a couple of characters useing silenced pistols at night and the MUZZLE FLASH was like a flash bulb! Silencers, for those who don't know, have the bonus of acting as "flash hiders" since they contain the burning propelant gases.

| True, that's hysterical. I mean, why use noisy arrows (which cause huge explosions, on top of that) instead of packing an RPG? |

John Rambo doesn't sleep...he waits.
Oh sorry, that's Chuck Norris.

Are you sure it's not the Pinkerton detective agency?

| It wasn't the exploding arrows. Those I expected to be noisy. But the regular arrows that just pinned a guy's head to a post, the pointy non-explodey kind, made an over-loud whooshing sound. |

They were still probably modified by JR himself to strike fear into the (Godless)hearts of his enemies.

If you listen closely to both Rambo 2 & 3, you'll hear that the exploding arrows have a clicking noise. Some people might mistake it as part of the music soundtrack. But it isn't. I think that is supposed to be the sound of the detonator mechanism.
Oddly, the detonator only activated after you twist the arrow head. But this maybe a continuity error because clearly in some scene Rambo didn't even bother to arm the arrowheads.

Unlikely, in Rambo 1 First Blood Part II, he assembles the bow. The chick asks what it was and he says something to the effect of "It's a bow. It's quieter." A line made stupid thanks to the sound effects guy. |

Apparently during WWII, the Germans added a whistle to the fusilage of Stuka divebombers. They felt the "scream" made the bombardment even more intimidating.
Perhaps the arrows were designed on the same principle? |

Weeeellll......
Not quite.
A 'flash supressor' and a silencer are in fact two different items. Not all silencers have flash supressors, and though I'm not up on current weaponry, you could get flash supressors for rifles and other long arms that had no silencing capacity.
Now, the action of a silencer would tend to minimize any muzzle flash by virtue of the fact that it disperses the hot exhaust gasses of the weapon. But, it is not sufficient itself to completely eliminate muzzle flash.
Would the flash be anywhere near as visible as it is in a Hollywood movie? No, of course not, not even on a completely stock weapon. In movies they have special cartridge loads that make nice big flashes that look good on camera. When he was making JFK, Oliver Stone's armorers had to work very hard to duplicate the 'white puffs of smoke' that some witnesses claim to have seen on/around the grassy knoll, since no gun manufactured in this century uses powder that gives off that kind of residue.
Just setting the record straight.
MikeC, Knows a little about silencers..... |

In Rambo IV Rambo returns to Afganistan to kill the people he helped in Rambo III.

A proper silencer is HUGE and would be sufficent to hide the flash. Hollywood uses small cylenders and sometimes GRENADE LAUNCHERS to simulate silencers, these would be too small to be effective. Here's a few real ones, note the size of them in relation to the guns. http://www.impactguns.com/store/silencers.html
