On October 28th, the Alex Theater in Glendale, CA will be showing Vincent Price in House on Haunted Hill.
With EMERGO!

There is a slight chance I'll be in the area. Must drag my boss to this since whenever I am selling the custom GPI/O features in our software I use Emergo as a classic example of the "whatever" theater event.
About one customer in four smiles when I bring it up.

Good luck on that; the Alex is a beautiful theater (I saw Bride of Frankenstein there).

I have tickets to the matinee. Bwa ha! I may not go to B-Fest, but I will see the latest wonder of science, EMERGO!

You know, with a little creativity I bet I could install EMERGO in my home theater for Halloween this year. What a cool idea!! PERCEPTO too!

It's a funny thing about skeletons.
I was just thinking about this while watching The Black Castle in the Boris Karloff Collection. That's got to be one of the very few films I've seen with a gibbet occupied by a disarticulated skeleton -- just a heap of bones in bottom of the cage.

Well, this was a blast and a half.
I had previously seen Bride of Frankenstein at the Alex, and the Alex Film Society had filled the lobby with artifacts about various actors from the Universal horror era. I was disappointed that they hadn't done the same with Vincent Price, whose career in radio alone wcould fill a wall or two. Instead, the history aspect was restricted to a handout. Among other things, this described the House itself; built by Frank Lloyd Wright, appeared in other films including Blade Runner, is now falling apart and sliding down the hill and badly in need of preservation. I need to send them a few bucks.
Still, my worries vanished when I entered the theater and noticed two thin cords stretching from the screen back to the balcony. I immediately surmised that these odd embeleshments had something to do with the miracle of the Emergo process, but I will say no more, lest I ruin the magic.
Before House on Haunted Hill, they showed a Bugs Bunny cartoon (the one with Witch Hazel and the guy who looks like Shakespeare) and a Stooges short. I've never been much of a Stooges fan, and the Bugs Bunny cartoon was a weak effort, but I was enjoying myself.
I assume everyone here's seen the film, so I won't go into it all. But what did strike me, as it did when watching Bride of Frankenstein, is that watching a film like this with an audience is a humor enhancer. Vincent Price saying, "She's so amusing," always gets a wry grin out of me when watching on video; watching with an audience it elicits actual laughter.
This was the first time I've seen the film with Emergo, and what really struck me is how tacked-on it is. The film did not seem to be edited with the Emergo process in mind. I would have expected the Emergo skeleton to be shown only in moments when the film skeleton was not actually visible, and that the actors on screen would be made to react to the Emergo skeleton, in order to foster and heighten the uncanny illusion that a flourescent skeleton had Emergoed from the screen. Instead, both skeletons were visible at the same time, making the exercise seem arbitrary.
It was a great afternoon.
