It appears that Sophia Coppola is the butt monkey of Jabootu these days. He last film, Lost in Translation, was probably saved by Bill Murray's performance and she won an Oscar. Her current film, Marie Antoinette sounds like it's all her and she ain't all that good.
I have not seen the film in question, but I have seen Lost In Translation and I can see some of the things the reviewer above says are in Antoinette in Translation.
Lost In Translation features Bill Murray as an aging American actor who is in Japan to shoot some ads. The bulk of the film follows Murray as he deals with the culture shock of being in Japan, not knowing the customs or the language. However, the story of Tanslation is about how Murray meets Scarlett Johansson and the connection they feel for each other being to strangers in a strange land. Most of Translation is confusing and off-putting. So it works for that film as it is about culture shock, which is confusing and off-putting.
What Miss Coppola seems to be doing with her films is just showing daily life as it happens. A typical day in Toyko. A typical day in 18th century France. The problem is she does not realise how fundamentally boring this is. When you make a film, something happens or else all the money spent on costumes, sets, etc is wasted.
If that reviewer is at all reliable, then this will be a Jabootu must-see movie on the order of the Cannes cut of the [url="http://www.listology.com/content_show.cfm/content_id.8504"]Brown Bunny[/url]. |
