I would have to say the original was the best--the whole "Send more paramedics" scene was creepy
I also liked part 3..Mind Clarke is soooo hot!

| I haven't seen the others in the series, but since ROTLD was one of the best horror-comedies ever, it's hard to imagine they were in the same league. A pity O'Bannon only directed one other film (the underrated Resurrected). |

"I know you're up there, Julie...I can smell your BRAAAAAAAAAAAAIN!!"
That line should be completely and utterly ridiculous. The fact that it's not, in the context of the movie, says a lot about how good RTOLD I is.
First one's definitely my favorite, no contest. I'd probably put three over two, mostly for having a plot that wasn't a total redo of the first one, some interesting and even touching plot elements, and (as ELOrocks said) the very tasty Mindy Clarke.
To be fair, I haven't seen the newest two films in the series. But considering the bits I saw of the fourth one, I'm guessing they might be good for a group MSTing and not much else.

The first one, its a given. A great mixture of comedy and horror, one of those movies I can easily rewatch once every few years. The less said about the sequels the better.
Possibly my favourite part the downbeat but hilarious end of the movie with the milatary's contingency plan. |

Yeah, that ending...it took me a while to figure out what the military was planning (ah, to be young and unfamiliar with horror movies again...), and when I did I was pretty sure I was wrong, it seemed so crazy. Then I found out I was right...too bad it was so ineptly presented. About the only false step in the whole movie. But the idea itself was about the perfect cap for the film, with its mostly grim tone.
My favorite part...man that's tough. I have been known to occasionally moan "Send more paramedics/cops!" when the situation warrants...Linnea Quigley seems too obvious a choice... Probably the whole scene in the Uneeda building following the Trioxin release...from the butterflies and split dogs to the battle with the corpsicle, it's nothing but insane fun.

Burt: "That's what I was trying to explain to you here, Ernie; they came in as part of a shipment. Of course, they weren't supposed to be rabid." -Return of the Living Dead |

Quigley makes that movie.
Milage varies, but I didn't like the ending. The military plan made sense, and frankly I find it hard to believe it would have resulted in what the film shows us. I think it just strained a little too hard for a cautionary conclusion.
PEGGY: I don't see how having a girl on the team would ruin it. Did a woman judge ruin the Supreme Court? HANK: Yes, and that woman's name was Earl Warren.

Hey how about a few cheers for the three "old guys": Clu Gulager, James Karen, and Don Calfa? They were superb! In your average George Romero film you're lucky if you can find even one good lead performance. O'Bannon pulled off a trifecta with this bunch.
Come to think of it, the performances were pretty solid right down the line, even Jewel Shepard, who in most of her films can't even yawn convincingly.
(O'Bannon's cameo was amusing as well.) |

ROTLD III is suprisingly good. It's got Kent "Adam 12" McCord in it! It taught valuable lessons: if your girlfriend dies, no matter how much you love her, don't zombifiy her. That kind of mixed relationship never works out. Also, don't try to militarize zombies. If you do try to militarize zombies, come up with a better control scheme than shooting a complex freeze dart square at their foreheads or some kind of remote control exoskeleton thingy that they can break out of. ROTLD IV and V (Necropolis and Rave to the Grave) both su-uucked. Man, were they bad. I'll walk a mile for a zombie movie but these two stinkers almost soured me on the genre altogether. They acheived a Zombie Lake level of badness without the copious nudity. |

Why di they have to make James Karen's character so whiney in the second one?

I'll gladly throw a few cheers toward the "old guys." And pretty much every possible aspect of the first film, for that matter. I certainly didn't mean to slight any of the actors in it; two of those guys are involved in my favorite sequence, after all.
