| David spade? He was great on the Just shoot me TV series, and even if he hadn't, i can't hate somebody who has "charged by police in his home state of Arizona with reckless jet-skiing" on his bio. That's too funny. |

| Spade's too low-key to really grate, IMHO. And with the right material he can be very funny. I even liked his Capitol One commercials. |

OK, Spade was tolerable on Just Shoot Me, or at least not more annoying than anyone else in the cast. But generally he is really whiny and irritating. I know a lot of people love the guy, but Chris Farley was mostly pretty annoying too. The "van down by the river" thing was funny. Once. Other than that, just screwing up your face, being fat and yelling does not make you John Belushi.

I'd have to say Al Franken. He was never funny on SNL, and he's turned into a complete nut over the past few years.

I agree with you about Spade and Just shoot me. I think it was because he wasn't the central character, therefore he never had a chance to grate.

I think people managing the careers of SNL alumni tend to forget that point - characters that can be amusing for a 5 minute skit, or as supporting characters doing 5 minutes per episode on a sitcom, can be deadly when expanded to the lead in a full-length movie.
It's kind of like real life - there are people out there who, in small doses are amusing because they're sarcastic, obnoxious, ditzy or generally insane. They can entertain us if we run into them occasionally, but we wouldn't want to actually have them linger in our vicinity. |
