I know Ken normally does a round-up of American Film Market titles; something I too have gotten into the habit of doing. Since neither of us are doing it this year I thought I'd give you a taste of some of the films being offered that will no doubt be coming our way in the next year or so. Most of the ones listed are genre (sci-fi/action/horror) and I'll leave it to you guys to make the snarky comments. I've already done stories about a couple of these on my blog and Dread Central. Enjoy. Keep in mind this is only a drop in the bucket.

Are you sure that Carnotaur isn't just the sequel to Steven Seagal's On Deadly Ground?

HACK! - A group of college students attending a biology field trip must fight for their survival as they are killed off one by one, in manners reminiscent of classic horror films. - Burt Young, Juliet Landau, William Forsythe, Danica McKellar
Nice to see Danica McKellar working again.

Hmm. I literally just finished reading the Cool Air short story a couple of days ago (I'm currently working my way through all of Lovecraft's and his contemporaries' public domain Cthulhuid stories). So I guess I already know the ending. :)
Really though, the blurb here makes the secret sound much more horrifying than it really is. They'd have to radically alter it to turn it into a real horror tale. Most of the Lovecraft stories I've read so far have been this way--not so much outright scariness as unsettling creepiness and suspense. They have more in common with Edgar Allan Poe than modern shockfests.
I'm curious to see how they pulled it off. |

BTW, HACK! sounds like it's about someone coughing up a lugie to me.
Or perhaps it's a heartwarming family story about a team of misfit hackeysack players who, with the help of gruff but caring new coach, manage to go on to win the all-state hacking tournament. |

That last sentence makes me wonder if you have no idea who Albert Pyun is because his name is usually the kiss of death. Before Uwe Boll there was Albert Pyun.

[hangs head in shame] Quite right. I may have heard the name, but I'm not familiar with Pyun's works. Actually, I'm really not familiar with most directors. I've only started learning after reading here. And I've only just started reading the Lovecraft collection also.
I do know that the number of good Lovcraftian works is very small. Among the collection I downloaded was an essay called "A Lovecraftian Critique" about Lovecraft in cinema that pretty much said as much. I'd link to the essay, but it seems to have disappeared from the net entirely since I got it. The original Lovecraft Library site has vanished, and none of the mirrors I've found has that essay. They only mirror the main works page. Maybe there was some copyright problem or something.
In any case, while Cool Air was decent, but not great, as a short story, I find it a strange choice for a modern movie. It just doesn't have any action, or even much in the way of suspense, to merit such a translation. I'm not expecting it to be good, I just want to see what they did to it. |

Actually, that sounds like an entirely appropriate thing for a Lovecraft Library to do. OF COURSE they may say it was "copyright issues" or something ... but we know better, don't we? |

Carnotaur: I don't think those things are even as big as a T-Rex. How one of them is going to be enough to threaten the world is beyond me, when one T-Rex couldn't even threaten all of San Diego properly...
Cool Air: I can only pray that Lovecraft rises and quickens, and Mr. Pyun finds him on his doorstep, before it's too late and this movie is finished and released.
The Signal: Someone read Stephen King's "Cell"...
The Tripper: Paul Reubens, Jason Mewes, Balthazar Getty, Jamie King, Lukas Haas...that's quite the lineup Mr. Arquette got there.
I have to say, 1st Bite and Baron Against the Demons interest me the most. As long as the 2nd one doesn't end up being a CineMax After Dark-type feature. And I'll probably end up watching all the zombie ones too...

Couple dozen mags of .40 cal, some dozen 12 gage shotgun slugs.... Corse, i have started the stupid film with the Marines landing on "Death Island" and gone "Search and destroy" on Gencon's own! Hah! Just like the Necronomicon of the Mad Arab Abdul Alhazred, no matter how hard they try to suppress it, copies still turn up occasionally in odd corners of the world.
I'm talking of course of a full working mirror of The H.P. Lovecraft Library, complete with a copy of the Lovcraftian Critique I mentioned. I recommend it to anyone interested in what the author has to say about what makes a movie "Lovecraftian" in tone and what doesn't.
And if you haven't read much Lovecraft yet, you can get just about everything he wrote here. And if you're still not satisfied, Check out Lovecraft's Supernatural Horror in Literature essay, which kindly links to copies of many of the actual works he uses in his criticism. In other words, this site can keep you reading for a long time.
Meanwhile, I continue to slog away at them myself. The Dunwich Horror is next on my list.
Edit: Ok, this board is completely freaking out over my links because of their nested structure. I can't seem to get them to post correctly no matter how I tag them. So I'm having to post them here. Please ignore the automatic linking part and instead cut&paste the whole string and add http:// to the beginning of the line.
