Doom: I expected it to be one of the guilty pleasure movies. Boy I was WRONG. It was just as bad as "Batman and Robin". WTF with the wi-fu at the ending? There was improper use of the BFG. "Watch out Rock, that wall's going to attack! Whew, that was close".
Moulin Rouge: I heard how great this movie was. So, on TBS they had a showing of it. 0_o o_0 After 30 minutes of viewing this bloated overrated pretentious piece of crap, I turn to another station. My God, what type of drugs where they were on when they were making this God awful movie. Even "Naked Lunch" the novel made more sense than this movie. Top it off, I was wondering how much money did they bribed the Academy to have it nominated for Best Picture? Sorry if I pissed somebody off. If you like it, that's cool. Me I just couldn't understand it. Perhaps if they showed it again I'll try to watch the entire movie. Peace. =)
It's Coacoa Puffs, Bob. I have no idea why, but it fits the equation. |

| I'm with Freschel on Moulin Rouge. It had its moments, but it came nowhere near deserving a Best Picture nod. But that's nothing new for Oscar nods: deserve's got nothin' to do with it. |

Desperado - the trailers made it look like a dark, gritty action film, similiar to Unforgiven. It was a live-action cartoon at best.
The Blair Witch Project - I've had bowel movements that were scarier than this film. By the time it started to get interesting, it was over.

JackS, I'm curious what your expectations of the film were that you would be so disappointed with it. I watched it expecting a creepy John Carpenter horror film and that's exactly what I got.
I guess a big disappointment for me was The Matrix sequel. Just the rave scene alone is enough to induce dry heaves. If humanity's future is one big underground rave then I only have two words to say: "GO MACHINES!"

I swear I had the same reaction for that rave scene.
I was like, "Yeah...we got to...save humanity...and all that stuff. Because it looks...you know...worth saving."
Where is a good Sodom and Gamorrah type catastrophe when you need it?
And putting Cornel West into the movie? For God's sake, why? |

"Van Helsing" - what a waste. It started giving me a headache after the first 20 minutes.

Warning: long ranting post ahead.
I've been disappointed in just about every film adaptation of a SF novel I've ever seen. The only exceptions I can think of are Blade Runner and 2001, and 2001 doesn't really count anyway as the book and movie were being produced concurrently.
Some eggregious examples.
Dune--doomed from the start. It was just impossible to fit that much political and cultural info into a single movie. I loved Lynch's look for it though. But the Sci-Fi channel miniseries did a much better (and more accurate) job telling the story. If only the budget had been better.
The Puppet Masters--I grew up on Heinlein, so when I heard it was being made into a movie, I was thrilled. I shoulda known better. All the best parts of the story were ripped out and it was turned into a formulaic Hollywood retread. I felt cheated. Meh.
Starship Troopers--Another Heinlein classic ruined. This one was technically more fun to watch, but it just didn't sit right with me. It wasn't anything like I remembered the book to be. Then I learned about how Verhoeven deliberately set out to trash the story. Now I'm angry. But then again this page explains all it's problems better than I can.
(BTW, I highly recommend the CGI animated "Roughnecks". They went "back to the book" and made ST the way it should've been done. If only they'd actually finished the series.)
Total Recall--Another Verhoeven wreck. Ok, I have never actually read the novel, nor was I "disappointed" in it when I first saw it, but just recently I caught it again on cable tv, and I can only say I was surprised how lame it really is. They really should've named it "Totally Shattered", because busting up sugar glass seems to be about the only constant throughout the story (seriously, it seems like every other scene has shards of glass flying through the air).
Johnny Mnemonic--The short story is a classic of the cyberpunk genre. But like Puppet Masters, the movie watered it down into a paint-by-numbers formula movie. Since we all know that this movie is a featured review here, I'll just leave it at that.
The Lord of the Rings--My favorite book. Now don't get me wrong, the movies are not bad, but I do have some issues with Jackson's interpretation that just leave me cold, particularly in the unnecessary changes made to just about every character's character. A really good page criticizing the second and third movies can be found here. I suggest starting with "Broken Promises".
Well, that's enough for now. I've learned my lesson. Nowadays, every time I hear that one of my favorite stories is being made into a movie, I greet the news with fear and trepidation. I've heard that Rendevous With Rama is being considered. Please save me.... |

Rama has been in turnaround hell for ages. At one time David Fincher was onboard, of all people. I kind of doubt it will see the light of day, but who knows!!
On a similar note, what do you guys think of Kerry "Sky Captain" Conran making the John Carter of Mars movie?? That might actually be cool.

SKY CAPTAIN : Something just did not quite match up to the concept and the visuals. Something in the attitude, and the hero. Sad, realy.
PEARL HARBOR : Yes, there are enough idiots in Hollywood to screw up ANY concept for a film! Thank God i could skip through the DvD to check out the FX parts. Thats all they had for me!
