Hmm, not too often you see a critical meltdown like this (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/apocalypto/), where half the critics are calling it the worst movie of the year, and the others are calling it the best.
Unfortunately, due to my lack of stomach for sitting through gore, I guess I'll have to miss this. Anyone planning on seeing it? |

I'd sooner pay to see a 3D version of Mrs. Soffel then waste my money here.

I might just end up seeing it out of morbid curiousity.

You know, I've read a lot on the Maya civilization, and the trailer looks visually stunning. But at least one critic says it should really be NC-17 due to the violence, and I'm just not willing to sit through that.

I'm watching this. I have little tolerance for unnecesary gore, but I happen to like Mel Gibson's earlier films as a director, and the trailer looks great.

Movies like Saw and Hostel are garbage movies to me; gore for gore's sake. But a gory movie can work if the blood is simply incidental to the story. As for the time in history, I'm very interested. I am just wrapping up Gary Jenning's Aztec series. A hair-raising read, but well well worth it.

Yeas, true, the period itself is very interesting. How many movies we have about those civilisations besides The Road to eldorado? And considering the few things I've read about pre-Columbus America, his "let's show the gore" approach may be adequate.
Considering what you said about Saw, I may have more gore tolerance than I though. Still, I may think like you: it's not the ammount of gore you show, but how it is used. Certainly it did add very little to Saw, but I consider gorier stuff like Wolf Creek or even the Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2004 tolerable.

I'd say it looks pretty interesting. A big budget epic set in the ancient Mayan civilisation. If nothing else it looks good visually from the trailers and it is something we haven't seen before. I'm not that worried about the gore and as others have said it wouldn't necessarily be out of place in context.

In all honesty, massive body piercings give me the creeps anymore. I just don't handle well people with items sticking out from all over their bodies. That being said, I appreciate Gibson's attempt with this film. It might work towards showing a little bit of the reality of Mayan culture and dispel some of the myths. I might catch it on video when it comes out and the FF is readily available.

Having seen it in the theater today, I recommend Apocalypto very highly. Yes, it's gory, yes you need a strong stomach to see it. But the violence is a part of the story, not gratuitous. In all honesty, I don't think it's any more violent than Saving Private Ryan, and it's not a sleaze-fest like some of the blood-and-guts "horror" flicks we've seen recently.

Hmmm - I wonder if I can go see it and pull my childhood trick of removing my glasses whenever things get too scary.

Nah. Keep the gory stuff. I'm with Pip on gore for gore's sake. In a film like Privet Ryan, it fits the story context, as it may well do so here, but because of that setting, i don't have as much of an intrest.WW2 was my Dad's war, so it feels pertinant to modern life.maby thats short sighted of me i know, but, so be it.
Body pierceings...yuck. Sorry, not intrested in damaging the body unnessarily.
I guess, i just don't see the point of this as a fictional entertainment. Guess i'm content with watching bout this on the Discovery channel.

It's one of the better pure action chase flicks I've seen, even though it's people on foot in a jungle. It is gory, but it doesn't feel gratuitously so. So yeah, it worked fine for me.

Huh. I think something went a little goofy on the board. For the record, I wrote this:
