Just listened to a cd called CLOSED ON ACCOUNT OF RABIES. Its some famous works by E.A. Poe, performed by various artest.... Christopher Walkin doing "The Raven"....Debbi Harry singing/talking "The city and the sea".....Ken Nordine doing "The conqueror worm",Dr. John doing...uh..okey, i forget...but, that kinda thing. Sooooo... I was wondering. What is your favorite take on Poe's works? My fave. "Raven" is the Simpsons. "Quoth the raven- EAT MY SHORTS!" Amicus did a memorable take in an anthology film back in the 60's. And yes, as indicated, Poe parodys are desired!

I remember this from ninth grade English class:
We were studying short stories and the teacher put on a record of Basil Rathbone reading "The Tell-Tale Heart." (Or is it "The Tale-Tell Heart?") In any event, I still remember how over the top old Basil emoted for our young ears! It was really spooky. Imagine a room full of ninth graders perfectly still, chins propped on fists, eyes wide, listening to Poe read in a classic English voice on a crackling, hissing, popping album.
She was bred in old Kentucky, but she's just a crumb up here. |

Dude, i remember that one! When it comes to Poe, it's hard to choose between Basil, and Vincent Price. Both good reads...Hummm..wonder if Cushing or Lee ever did Poe....

Lee did two audiobooks of Poe (Tales of Mystery and Horror and Tales of Horror-- not very cleverly titled, I'm afraid) back around 1986. Good luck finding them, though maybe Soulseek'll help you out. (His reading of The Tell-Tale Heart is a riot-- he gets so worked up his voice starts cracking!)
James Mason did a nifty version of The Tell-Tale Heart with UPA Animation back in 1953; it's on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W4s9V8aQu4c . It's an extra on the Hellboy 2-disc DVD set. |
