To give this link more scope I use the could and not should.

Ah yes. The Unisex acting role. Do any of you think there are roles that have been played by men but could have been played by woman as well?

Two come to mind.

The first is Sheldon Kornpett D.D.S. from the Peter Falk version of The Inlaws. The character of Sheldon is a well-to-do dentist who gets mixed up in his in-law's espionge sceme to save the world. The thing that makes the role compelling is that the character has no heroic qualities. In fact, Sheldon does his best to get out of this adventure. Which led to great speech in the hotel lobby.

"Look Vince. If its cut and dry you don't need me anymore alright. Go in peace. I'll take a flight back home. And if the treasury dept. is waiting for me, I'll tell them what little I know. Chances are they'll just feel sorry for me. But I'm not going along on this adventure any more"

"If you like, I'll wait here at the hotel. But no more running. No more shooting. From here on out, I'm a by-stander."

After the speech and Falk starts to leave in a Taxi, Sheldon sees some men with guns starting to pursue. He then immediately goes to save Falk's life.

I should note here that Alan Arkin did great job with the role.

I've often thought this role would be good for a woman because of duality of lack of commitment vs instinct to be hero. Most woman I know try to avoid trouble when they can but will come through for you in pinch. Most female heros in movies seem to relish getting in to trouble with their male counterparts. But I would love to see a female hero who hates confrontation but gets thrust in to it anyway.

The second role is Brody in Jaws.

A female cop in Amity island wouldn't be a stretch. The worst crime they have is kids karating fences. If fact, the role Brody was supposed to be about someone who wasn't tough or a heavy. Imagine what kind of dynamic the Kinter speech would have taken if she was talking to woman(a woman with family no less) instead of Roy Schieder. Or how about the "showing of scars" moment between Quint and Hooper. Instead of male bonding, they could be trying to impress the female they have in their mist. Or how about hefting a big rifle to put the bullit in the air tank.

Hummm...interesting.
I can see the Brody version, as i've seen JAWS. Still, the interactions would have been noticably changed, as Quint and Hooper would have to have "Sisterly" feelings to Brody to keep the scenes more like the oroginal.
