| Haven't seen IAWL since I was a kid. All I remember back then is that it was way too long to hold my meager attention span. And as others have pointed out, it isn't a Christmas movie in the purest sense, anymore than, say, Meet Me in St. Louis or Holiday Inn or Little Women were. |

Also if you don't like Its A Wonderful Life don't watch it. TV sets do have channels you can change and on/off buttons. Why watch a movie you don't like over and over?

Because my family feels it isn't Christmas without it, and if I tell any of them to turn it off they either ignore me, get offended, or are all pouty and sad like I'm Scrooge and they're Bob Cratchit.
So go read or listen to the radio in your bedroom or the kitchen and let them watch in the living room. |

quote: I'm with Nshumate on this one. It's a Wonderful Life is corny, kitschy, obvious... and dammit, it gets me every time I watch it. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna see it for the eightieth time and get all weepy once again.
I felt the same way the first 100 times I saw it. Time 101 was when I first became a little annoyed. George starts coming off as a bit of a whiner.
I've often wondered: did Mary buy that old house without telling George? Or did she decide to move into the old house without buying it? Obviously, George didn't know anything about their new home until Bert and Ernie took him there after the "bank run." Were the Bailey's squatters? What's up with that? Did they ever have a house payment? Geez, George, if I didn't have a house payment, I'd feel pretty blessed instead of walking around feeling sorry for myself all the time.
She was bred in old Kentucky, but she's just a crumb up here. |

Maybe the building and loan got it back in a forclosure. The Building and Loan is an honest institution but not a charitable one. It would be neat to know that george had a bit of Mr. Potter in him.

All I remember about that house was that they would throw rcks through the windows and "make a wish". Or was that some other movie?

Good point/suggestion. I wondered how the Baileys got that house. |

| While it may be a stretch to believe Mary could've gotten the house without George's knowledge, you gotta remember it was abandoned for at least five years, and probably for much longer. It may have been sold to the county for taxes, and Mary could have gotten it from the county for a song. Or the owners may have been glad to get rid of it, and they would have deeded it over to Mary for almost nothing. |

You wouldn't know so from the movie which gives the general impression that George was just handing out scratch to all the poor but honest folk in Bedford Falls. Even though he built a complete subdivision with "the prettiest little houses you ever saw" and even had it named after him (Baily Park), he still was "worth more dead than alive."
Come on. If he doing all that business, why is the Building and Loan not making him, if not rich, at least pretty comfortable?

He IS comfortable. He's just too busy feeling sorry for himself to notice it. |

Was I the only one laughing when Potter offered George $20,000 a year and George nearly fell out of his seat?
My how times have changed.

I'm going to jump in and just say that I enjoy the movie.
I can tell you what would have completely ruined it, though: if Potter had reformed at the end. It would be so treacly people would be bouncing off the walls from the sugar high.
I did like the "lost ending" that Saturday Night Live did some years ago. "Potter took the money? Well, let's go kill him!" |

That's how the Tom Laughlin remake,The Wonderful Life of Billy Jack, will end.
