As long they keep the original episodes available, I have no real problem with the so-called upgrades either. (By the way, if I'm not mistaken, the original, un-enhanced Trek episodes are airing right now every night on Nick TV Land.)

By the way, as far as Balance of Terror is concerned, that episode has one fundamental flaw that even the best CGI wouldn't be able to fix. Without spoiling it for someone who hasn't seen it (or doesn't remember it) suffice to say that at one point the Enterprise takes nasty damage simply because Kirk evinces, as Spock would have described it in Wrath of Khan, "two-dimensional thinking".

Agreed.
As long as we can pick which version we like, i can live with it...but if they start messing with plot, diologue and characters, i'm takein' a Phaser to the makers of this thing, and i ain't settin' for stun!
Or the music! Touch not the Courage!

I like the space battles in TOS. Cause they kept the ship out of spittin distance! Like Star Fleet Battles does, they fight at ranges proper for such technology.
Look... just technobabble about adding a short lived "Wormhole" to a phaser beam, to get the energy up to FTL speeds, and its all good. No more "So close i could spit on their windshield" stuff, ah-rite!
Yeesh!

NH, no they kept the same phrasing for the intro and it's the original Shatner monologue I believe. They redid the actual music (it's the same) and hired a singer to redo the vocal "ah-ah" part. You can pick out it's slightly different, but they tried to make it sound the same.

I think HDTV is really driving the decision. And as mentioned above, as long as they offer both versions, I don't see a problem with it.
