When I saw the posters for this was "I have absolutely no interest in seeing this" and then the commercials had me thinking a computer program must have written the flick. I'm not a fan of the Hannibal movies (I've only seen Manhunter and Silence of The Lambs), or any "psycho killer" type franchise, anyway, but this one looked to be even more useless than usual.
In a lot of cases, I don't like the idea of creating pre-quels that explain characters that are probably better off having their origins remain a mystery.

SPOILERSSPOILERSSPOILERSSPOILERSSPOLERSSPOILERSSPOILERSSPOILERSSPOILERS The plotline of "somebody was forced to turn to cannibalism to avoid starvation and the trauma turned him into a serial killer" has been done before-in Geoffrey Household's short story "Taboo" and in one of Janet Laurence's whodunits about her chef/detective, Darina Lisle. |

Hannibal the cannibal samurai - that should have been the movie's real title. A Crispin Glover look-alike with the personality of an alternate universe, European sophisticate version of The Joker... A man-eating Punisher that suffers from night terrors and an extreme hatred for slovenly butchers that sexually harass women... Gallivanting about Europe on a quest to go post-war Deathwish on the men that ate his little sister, men that all went on to become despicable human beings that deserved to have their faces eaten by a cannibalistic med student hellbent on revenge. Hannibal the leering, sneering, blade-swinging, face-chewing, serial killing superhero who even gets to pay homage to Zorro by carving a letter into the main baddie's chest, he does it all while lusting after his really hot Japanese aunt played by a Chinese actress. And gets away with his killing spree in the end because... Well… Ummm… Just because. Besides - THEY ATE HIS SISTER!
What a stupid movie.

Even worse, it was also done in the classic Italian explotation flick Virus, starring John Saxon. |

I still can't believe that I paid full price for the novel as an advance sale. Thomas Harris - you are a turd.

What annoys me is that film makers (and novels to a certain extent) seem to have forgotten that sheer dread of pure motiveless evil.
Dracula sucking the blood of virgins? He's just missing his girlfriend from 500 years ago Hannibal Lector eating people alive? He's just missing his sister who was eaten alive. Darth Vader attempting the domination of the universe? He's just missing his wife who died in childbirth.
I look forward to an HP Lovecraft adaption in which Cthulu is just the product of an unhappy marriage.

Yeah, a great example of this is, according to the script reviews, Rob Zombie's remake of Halloween which will "explain" that the reason why Michael kills is due in part due to his stripper mother and alcoholic stepfather. I also belive there's something about his big sister picking on him.
Of course it's better than Druish cults, and massive conspiracies, etc, but still... |

Mark, did you just say that Rob Zombie is remaking Halloween?
Ya don't need to see a Rob Zombie movie for gore. Just come over to my place: my head just exploded. |

But seriously....
To be brutally honest, I now think Thomas Harris is overrated as a writer. He's turned into a one-trick pony, the sole exception being Black Sunday. Okay, Silence was great, and Black Sunday was in the ballpark. But Red Dragon was a disappointment (I thought Manhunter was actually better than the book); I nearly cracked up laughing when the guy started EATING the painting! Haven't read Hannibal, nor do I intend to, knowing how it ends (good move, Mr. Harris, turn an honest-to-God heroine into another cannibal!). And I wish I never heard of Hannibal Rising. |

| Harris is popular because he allows elite critics to enjoy exploitive violence without having to admit they lowered themselves to Revenge of the Mutant Splat Gore Monster or Die Screaming With Sharp Things in Your Head. |

I remember reading some commentary about the first Dirty Harry movie where The Scorpio Killer wages a sniper campaign against San Francisco, kidnaps a girl and lets her die, etc.
[Eerily similiar to the exploits of the D.C. Sniper]
That movie drew a lot of flak from liberal activists and ideologues because of Harry's heavy-handed (yet effect) police techniques. One line they particularly didn't care for was when a police chief asks Harry why he thinks the Scorpio killer is so brutal.
"Because he likes it."
That went totally against the more progressive mode of thought at the time that believed that criminals were merely a product of society and ultimately not responsible for their own actions. |

Hannibal Riseing. Must refer to his lunch. Oh, wait...that was my lunch! Hate these movies. As much because, like Foywonder expressed, they make a monster into a hero. Hero? Nooooo....he rationalises evil, by saying "I suffered!" Look, pal, others have suffered worse then you...and worse then, YOU, Jeffery Dahmer ( As an example ), and they refused to become like their tormentors...ever hear of Eli Wessal?..man,I hope i spelled that right... All evil people are selfish, and refuse to put their needs behind those of others. They are just the extream of selfishness.

The idea that a character was just always a sociopath is far more chilling rather than being made that way...

Exactly. Witness, if you will, the little girl from "The Bad Seed".
