Let's add another Orson Welles role: Hank Quinlan in Touch of Evil.
This is kinda obvious, but I'm surprised no one has mentioned HAL-9000 from 2001. "I'm sorry, Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that."
Bobby Thompson (Tim O'Kelly) in Targets
Ummmmm, that guy who says "Say hello to my little friend!" Need I say more?
The Mouse is in the house....
Captain Nemo (James Mason) in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
Sentimental choice (laugh all you want): Hans Reinhardt (Maximillian Schell) in The Black Hole
Malificent in Sleeping Beauty
Dillinger/Sark (and Master Control) (David Warner) in Tron
"Billy" in the original Black Christmas
Chop out the last ten minutes, and I wouldn't mind adding the killer (Phillippe Nahon) from High Tension. In its complete form, forget it.
Christopher Lee's version of Dracula in Horror of Dracula
D-Fens (Michael Douglas) from Falling Down |

I never saw The Third Man, but I have listened to all these episodes of The Lives of Harry Lime. Apparently, a radio show inspired by Welles' performance in the movie. He stars in all the episodes as an almost likeable con man and thief traveling exotic locales.
The Harry Lime from The Third Man is far more despicable and reprehensible, but no less charismatic. He also delivers one of the greatest movie speeches of all time, hero or villain. (The ferris wheel sequence.) Reportedly, Welles, who otherwise had nothing to do with the screenplay for The Third Man, wrote most of the dialogue for that scene himself. |

Brad, you forgot one.
Long John Silver(Robert Newton) in Treasure Island.
There has NEVER been an equal to play that role. Newton IS Long John.

It was Tony Montana in Scarface. I wouldn't call him the villain of that movie, despite him being a murderous, coked-up coke dealer with a hairtrigger temper.
You know Grand Funk, don't you? The wild, shirtless lyrics of Mark Farner? The bong-rattling bass of Mel Schacher? The ... adequate drumwork of Don Brewer? |

Arrrrrgh! Can't believe I forgot that one.
We might ought to throw in Davy Jones from Pirates of the Carribean and Jafar from Aladdin, although that latter one may be more of a comic villain. |

On a lighter note...
I've always thought that David Bowie made a perfect Goblin King in Labyrinth, both in looks and demeanor. And he can sing too! :-P
How about Harvey Korman as Hedy Lamarr ("That's 'Hedley'!!"), in Mel Brook's Blazing Saddles? And let's not forget Rick Moranis as Dark Helmet in Spaceballs as well. "You went over my helmet?"
Max Von Sydow was superbly over-the-top as Brewmeister Smith in Strange Brew. "I could crush your head..like a nut".
Finally, John Lithgow was perfectly crazy as Lord John Whorfin in The Adventures of Buckaroo Bonzai. "Laugh-a while you can, monkey-boy!" |

Paul Hurst, as the would-be rapist Scarlett shoots on the staircase in GONE WITH THE WIND. Margaret Hamilton, as the Wicked Witch of the West. |

Those are all good choices, but I must disagree with two because they are more like "Designated Villains": Nurse Ratched(Louise Fletcher) in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. And she's a villainess, WHY? Nickleson was a child molestor in that movie, yet he was "the hero" because we were TOLD he was!
Where does it say that? |

I'd like to give a shout out to the following:
Max Cady(Robert De Niro) in Cape Fear. ______________________________________________________________________
I prefer Robert Mitchum, in the original CAPE FEAR and in NIGHT OF THE HUNTER. De Niro's Cady was too close to the parody Max Shady in FATAL INSTINCT. Another great movie villain, not yet mentioned here, is Stephen Boyd, as Messala in BEN-HUR. |

Orson Welles is a very good choice. Bela Lugosi was a better Dracula than Chrisopher Lee.

| Sorry, I think I liked Wallace Beery's "Long John Silver" the best. |

Another excellent choice. And I can't believe I missed Robert Newton and Margaret Hamilton.
Speaking of which... remember These Three, which I brought up in another thread? Bonita Granville as the wicked little girl definitely counts as a great villainess.
Other oldies but goodies:
Dr. Hugo Hollingshead (Boris Karloff) in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty Fräulein Rottenmeier (Mary Nash) in Heidi (1937) Phillip Vandamm (James Mason) in North by Northwest (1959) Guy of Gisbourne (Basil Rathbone) in The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins) in Psycho (1960) Hyman Roth (Lee Strasberg) in The Godfather Part 2 (1974)

I can't believe no one (including myself) has mentioned....
"KHA-A-A-A-A-A-N-N-N!!!"
Two villains played by Max von Sydow: Ming the Merciless in Flash Gordon and Leland Gaunt in Needful Things. |

AAAhhhh! How can you mention Max Von Sydow and not mention this:
Joubert(Max Von Sydow) in Three Days of the Condor
A precuror to more laid back assassins if there ever was one. And yeah, yeah. The mailman had his moments.
One other thing. Long John was a great villian because he always knew what side the bread was buttered on. He always played the angle. Like when he saw the ship was back in Captain Smollet's hands, he canives to stab his shipmates in the back. If you ever get the feeling that Robert Newton is not THE Long John Silver, then foil the antenna because you're getting interferance.

Ohh. I can't help myself. These next two clips are dedicated to the coolest and tragic bad guy I've ever seen.
