Another excellent choice. And I can't believe I missed Robert Newton and Margaret Hamilton.
Speaking of which... remember These Three, which I brought up in another thread? Bonita Granville as the wicked little girl definitely counts as a great villainess.
Other oldies but goodies: Guy of Gisbourne (Basil Rathbone) in The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938)
I was about to mention Basil Rathbone myself. If you read up on the Scottish case that Lillian Hellman based THESE THREE and THE CHILDREN'S HOUR on, the little girl becomes much more three dimentional. She was an illegitimate half-caste and, I suspect, the teachers genteely rubbed her nose in what a favor they were doing her, letting her into their lily-white school. That doesn't excuse her lying about the teachers being lesbians, if she did lie, but it makes her something besides a vicious little monster. |

Re: Joubert and Khan: I did mention them in my first post. But a great villain is always worth mentioning twice. :)
BTW, I didn't realize These Three/Children's Hour was based on a true story. |

Vincent Price could probably qualify for many of his rolls!
Here are some of interest:
Ernest Borgnine as Shack in EMPEROR OF THE NORTH POLE Richard Widmark as Tommy Udo in KISS OF DEATH Strother Martin in COOL HAND LUKE Lee Marvin as Vince Stone in THE BIG HEAT

I THOUGHT somebody was going to mention SOMETHING with Lee Marvin in it. Strother Martin is also a good choice. |

Oliver Reed in Oliver!. And most of his other movies *g*. I hate Oliver (the movie, that is) passionately. For me it represents the absolute epitome of all I hate about musicals. But Reed is amazing- he almost makes it all worth watching.

Richard III (Sir Ian McKellen) in Richard III - Absolutely, unrepentantly, gleefully evil.

Those are all good choices, but I must disagree with two because they are more like "Designated Villains": Nurse Ratched(Louise Fletcher) in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. And she's a villainess, WHY? Nickleson was a child molestor in that movie, yet he was "the hero" because we were TOLD he was!
Where does it say that?
It's IMPLIED that he's the "hero". Unless you mean the "child molester" part? It's stated when he has his interview with the psychiatrist in the begining of the movie.

I too cannot believe I forgot Margaret Hamilton. What a classic performance that was. And she gets the greatest death speech EVER.
For Vincent Price I'd nominate Edward Lionheart from Theatre of Blood, Prof. Henry Jarrod in House of Wax, and, of course, Dr. Phibes.

| The mention of Strother Martin in COOL HAND LUKE reminded me of Hope Emerson in CAGED. Then there was Sydney Greenstreet in THE MALTESE FALCON and THE WOMAN IN WHITE. And, politically incorrect as he now seems, why has no one mentioned Richard Loo, in I WAS AN AMERICAN SPY, FIRST YANK IN TOKYO, THE PURPLE HEART, GOD IS MY CO-PILOT, MALAYA? Mirror, mirror, on the wall/ Who's the meanest one of all? |

Raymond Massy in Arsnic And Old Lace.
Paul Freeman as Dr. Rene Belloq in Raiders Of The Lost Ark. His dialog in the coffie house where he talked about the nature of archiology was my favorite! "Do you know what the ark is? It's a radio for talking to God!" Priceless!

Anybody notice that 95% of our picks seem to be for male villains? Surely there have been great double-X chromosomes of evil to vie with the twisted XY chromosomes of cinemania of our time (other than the aforementioned Margaret Hamilton, of course).
Funny how most of the great villainess I can think of offhand were Disney cartoon characters (Cruella DeVille, the Queen from Snow White, the Step-Mom from Cinderella, Ursula from The Little Mermaid, et al). |

How about the Queen from Alien? Or the Witch in Blair Witch Project? Or the Floating Dead Girl in The Ring
Also...
The robot in the Terminator (I want to be the Pippinator.) Beverly in Dead Ringers (I want an evil twin.) Roy in Bladerunner (I want to be a Nexus Pip.) Costello in the Departed (OK, he's just a jerk.)

And Louise Fletcher in ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST. What I noticed was how many of our picks seem to be prison guards. The Vietcong officer in THE DEER HUNTER, anyone? |
