Well, here it is. Rambo is back in all his kick ass glory.

WARNING: This is a gory trailer!

Click here to see the trailer!

It looks like they're going for a Rambo First Blood: Part 2 and Saving Private Ryan hybrid.

Oughta be interesting. My gut says it's gonna suck, while my mind says that I said the same thing about Rocky Balboa and Stallone proved me wrong.

The trailer pretty much gives away everything, though.

Several thoughts:

1.) It doesn't look like they have a chief bad guy this time around. No Colonel Pedoffski or Colonel Zitzin or Sheriff Tease to confound.

2.) No cool helicopters. Not sure if that is a good or bad thing.

3.) They might have recast Troutman. That, to me, is a disservice to the late Richard Crenna.

4.) The arrows no longer have that loud whizz. But its been replaced with a low whoosh. Don't know if that's a plus.

5.) They've toned down the exploding arrow heads. Instead of taking out a city block, they might just take out a small car or a small human body.

6.)There's a another girl in this film and it look like she will be in the film for the duration. Forgive me for saying. But the Rambo series has always been a "No Girls Allowed" zone. That's why they rightly waxed Cho in Rambo part 2.

Hell yeah!!!

Looks like Stallone really meant it when he said he wanted a more brutal, direct to the bone actioner this time. He looks VERY old, but the action seems cool enough, and I haven't seen so much blood on screen since "Saving Private Ryan".

As for the stuff Capt. Nrmo mentions, I don't think they've recast Trautman. Earlier info featured James Brolin as a Trautman-like character (or so I thought), but the present info at the IMDB ditches Brolin and has Sam Elliot instead. In either case, none of the caracters has ever been nemed "Trautman".

As for the rest, I can live with less lethal arrows and even a gril running around, but the helicopters are another story, specially now that they could use real Hips and Hinds for very few money.

Anyway, the only absence that really bothers me here is Jerry Goldsmith. His scores for the remaining movies of the series are some of the best old-school action music* ever produced, and I wouldn't like it any different this time.

* For all you under 25, there was a time before Hans Zimmer and his protegés when action movies featured full orchestral music instead of synthetisers, and it rocked.

Hmm, I remember that time.

I guess The Matrix and it's sequels epitomize the "new" soundtrack ehtos. That and the overt "goth" overtones that I've been sick to death of for about 12 years now.

Music in soundtracks is a multi-million dollar industry in and of itself. Modern pop music sells more cds than an Elfman instrumental score.

It would suck if John Rambo had a soundtrack with music from "Rage Against the Machine" or...damn...I know nothing about current pop music.

Why do I get the feeling that the John Rambo character is actually going to die at the end of this movie?

I think the trend started way earlier, in the 90s, when Zimmer and others started offering synth-based scores for action movies. The funny thing is that I like many of those, such as Zimmer's work for Black Rain or The Peacemaker. But from The Rock onwards, it's hard to tell the scores (and even the composers) apart.

Citizen Carrier...

No worries about RATM. They've been broken up for a couple of years now.
I guess they could still use their music though...

Anyway, there are a lot worse fates than RATM in a movie.

Glitter soundtrack, anyone?

If you mean the Christian missionaries (or whatever they are), yes, it's quite refreshing to see them in a more neutral light than the usual Ned Flanders stereotype.

But I have to admit that watching Rambo pray before comitting several on-screen murders was quite disturbing. And even more so if they imply Rambo is an instrument of God's will. I mean, if God doesn't need an spaceship (see Star Trek V), why woulfd he need a Green Beret?

I hope when the film finally is on theatres that the theological discussion doesn't get in the way of the mayhem.

I'm not talking about the Ned Flanders stereotype. I'm talking about the lecherous hypocrite stereotype.
Are they on-screen murders or on-screen killings in self-defence? The Talmud very clearly says "If someone comes to slay you, slay him first."

Yeah, well, I think we're on the same league about these Christians not being portrait as it's become the standard cliche this days.

As for the killings... Rambo is not exactly known as "the ultimate defending machine", you know. I'll try to hold myself from judging the ideology of a movie that has yet to be released, but that bit in the trailer disturbed me. I'm alright with fictional on-screen deaths served as entertainment (I think we all have a part of the brain that likes to see things going boom), but throwing God into the mix is a bit too much.

As for the Talmud quote... do we really want to take a Rambo movie THAT seriously?

Really, I wish Sly well. He has no one to blame but himself for the joke he's devolved to in moviedom, but deep down he is a very talented guy (and a better actor than people give him credit for).

I'm not holding out high hopes for another Rambo sequel (even the original First Blood is showing its age, or maybe I'm just older now) but I'd love to be proven wrong.

I don't know what is so disturbing about Rambo praying before going into battle against so obvious bad people.

My platoon always said a prayer before going outside the wire in Baghdad. I usually continued saying one for the entire time we were outside the wire.

Movie audiences will tend to be sympathetic to Christian missionaries trying to go into a place and save some lives.

I doubt this movie would be as successful if instead of missionaries it featured guilt-ridden, white, middle-class war protestors going into the country to act as "human shields" to protect important rogue regime installations from allied air attacks.

Rambo would likely just as soon let those people get what is coming to them...as would I.

Some more thoughts.

One of the things I like about it is the lack of smart ass quips. Unlike some movies I could name(I know! It's a low blow), that character trait has worn out its welcome.

I think the chances are good that this film will get the "300 treatment." As eliquently put by Ken(click here).

As for the Troutman thing, that actor that tells Rambo about the missionaries or whatever not returning sure does look like him.

One last point, I'm fairly certain. Rambo is a dead man.

True, no one-liners in sight. Good thinking.

A few thoughts....

-I like Stallone a lot, but I just think he might be a tad old for this. I honestly couldn't shake the feeling that I was watching Jackie Stallone in this trailer

-I'm fairly certain the actor playing the guy asking Stallone to help is Ken Howard, from the "White Shadow", although IMDB does not confirm

-I also think Rambo will not live to see the end of the movie

-I guess I have no problem with one liners, as I think "Live Free or Die Hard" will be about 45 times better than "John Rambo: AARP Avenger".
