I am not a great fan of home for the holidays Christmas movies as a rule but some are genuinely good
The best (in my opinion) A Christmas Story the Jean Shephard story Its a Wonderful Life A Christmas carol with Alistaier Simm
The worst: Christmas with the Kranks. This is one of the worst movies I have ever seen. I expected Jabootu worthy crap and I got worse than i bargained for. This is worse than all the Lifetime Channel's heartwarming touched by an angel Christmas junk combined. I suspect that Ken himself would have trouble sitting through this.
I was going to list Santa Claus Conquors the Martians until I saw Christmas with the Kranks.
Santa Claus: The Movie is overblown crap as well
I hope that others will list thieir favorites and comments. Made for TV junk is simple too easy a target though. |

Good ones: Gremlins, Die Hard.
Bad ones: The Santa clause. |

Bad: Scrooged with Bill Murray was pretty bad. That last painful scene with him shouting forced good cheer at the rest of the cast...wow.

Not exactly bad, but The Nativity Story is easily one of the most disappointing Christmas movies I've seen. This could have been an instant classic, and it had no excuse not to be. Instead, it's a safe, gutless little thing (albeit with a few interesting performances, especially from Oscar Isaacs and Alexander Siddig), about as interesting as a six-year-old's Sunday School lesson. I can get better (and have, several times) by going to church and listening to an interesting Christmas sermon.
I'll add the George C. Scott version of A Christmas Carol to the Best list. If we're counting short films and TV specials, A Charlie Brown Christmas counts, as does The Snowman. If I saw The Small One today, I might not be as taken with it as I was when I was a kid, but I loved that little feature too. |

I find Christmas with the Kranks not only to be horrible to me its morally repugnant. A kind of perfect merging of form and content.
These Lifetime channel movies about how Santa's daughter saves christmas for an over worked single father and the like make my skin crawl. |

The Best A Christmas Carol George C. Scott version. Charlie Brown Christmas Miracle on 32nd Street Rudolph The Red Nose Reindeer Frosty the Snowman
The Decent The Santa Clause Elf Christmas Vacation Language and some adult content prevent this from being a family film. But parts of it are absolutely hilarious. This is one of those films where if they cleaned it up a bit, it would have a greater following. White Christmas Little Drummer Boy
The Bad Star Wars Holiday Special Someone needs to list it. Pretty much anything else made the past 30 years.

I would say that the origonal version, Holliday Inn was the better movie. It wasn't EXACTLY a Christmas movie, but the final scene has a Christmas theme.
Santa Clause, the movie had a good start. It told the origin of Santa, explaining some things and developing into the legendary character we all know; but then the wheels come off in the second half with a dumb plot.
The Homecoming, the pilot for The Waltons series, belongs in the "best" class.
Mentioning A Muppet Christmas Carol may get me lynched, but it was kind of entertianing. Not "the worst", but not "the best" either.

PS: After seeing a certain MST3000 short, I can't watch It's A Wonderful Life without giggling and saying "noooo springs!" (Whistle) while people look at me as if I had lost my mind.

| Oh yes The Grinch horrible beyond the beyond. All the charms and wit and humor and spirit that was in the original book and 1/2 hour tv show with Boris Karloff is sucked out of this huge lifeless movie. Hollywood did the same with the Cat In The Hat. Just what were tehy thinking? |

I always had a soft spot for National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, myself. Down here in Oz, it used to be shown every Christmas night at about 6.30. Perfect to nod off to.

Kind of a back-handed complement there. *grin*
Christmas Vacation has some good moments, and some very bad ones. I don't take it seriously (especially the mawkish ending) and have fun while watching it. Of course, when I go to my dad's to see it (as we usually do each year), we both yell "SQUIRREL!!!" along with Clark's dad/ |
